I personally do not have an issue with eighteen years olds during bail enforcement recovery if properly trained. We as a nation do not seem to have a problem sending seventeen and eighteen years olds off to war and to fight and die for this country’s continued freedoms. If they commit a crime they are charged as an adult, yet they are not allowed to consume alcohol. In Texas you can become a fully sworn police officer at nineteen years old.

Training becomes the issue.

The military and LE do train their recruits. Many states do not have any training requirements such as the case is in CA.

Even with the "new" proposed law in CA, there is no training, only educational classes with very little to do with bail enforcement.

People being as lazy as they are will not normally go above and beyond trhe minimum requirements.

Yes there are some very mature 18 years. They are the exception rather than the norm. Heck, there are some very inmature 30 y/os running around, so any age limit could be just an arbitrary point.

However, in CA, an 18 can not own a handgun. If we are going to put together a team of agents, all should be able to legally own and possess all necessary gear to ensure their and their team members safety.

I know a couple 18yo's I would be fine with working with. It's about the individual really. I don't carry a handgun on recovery so 18yo's and handguns isn't an issue with me. I have a permit, I have no problem with those who carry reasonably on a job, but I don't feel a constant need for a firearm. Shoot... sometimes I really don't feel the need for mace, but take it with more in case of 3rd party interference.

It's not 18yo's who have recognizable training or acceptable experience who I have a problem with. It's the 18yo who sees recovery as an opportunity to roll around with weapons aplenty plastered to their side and have the high hopes of seeing a lot of action.

I do agree I have met some 18yo that really have their sh*t together. Sadly they are not in the majority. I really have to agree with Tony on the firearm issue. being able to carry a gun when doing this job is the final " Im going home to mine". Sucks but true. We may do 100 arrests and never have to use any force at all but its that one time and you are dead. Personally my partner and i have made well over the hundred mark and have never had to use any force above minor hands on luck or skill? I will take luck everytime. Agian if it comes to a deadly force pissing match Im going home to those 2 beautiful little girls on my avitar.

Agree. I also think the age part of this topic grew serious wings! LOL. Anybody heard anything about the voting process? Any idea how long this sort of thing takes?

The Public Safety Committee may hear the bill on the 25th which is odd as that is a Sunday. So, I am sure that will change.

It must pass PS committee and then go to full assembly. After that it goes to Senate. If it passes all those it goes to governor for his signature and take effect Jan. '13.(?)

I’ll be glad when this passes. It will bring professionalism back to industry. I have come across some people who have no business in this business.
