Wanted Felon in Police Custody After Massive Manhunt

Sep 10, 2007 06:34 PM PDT

The month-long search for a fugitive felony suspect came to end Monday afternoon in the south part of the Las Vegas Valley.

McLeroy was stopped by police Monday afternoon but managed to jump out of his minivan and hide out in the south valley neighborhood. Police set up a perimeter and searched yards and homes for McLeroy for nearly three hours before a resident tipped police off.

Neighbors say they were scared when police notified them McLeroy was considered armed and dangerous.

The Nevada Fugitive Investigative Strike Team, which included various police forces in the area as well as Federal Marshals, had been conducting surveillance on Danny McLeroy. But would not say why.

About a year ago, McLeroy was picked up on a felony warrant from the Nevada attorney general's office. The warrant was for aiding and abetting an escaped fugitive -- namely Jody Thompson, whom Las Vegans may recall was on the run for three months but finally caught in 2006. Thompson was wanted for at least two armed robberies and a couple of high speed police chases in Las Vegas, in addition to crimes elsewhere.

While McLeroy was in jail on the aiding and abetting charge, a friend was able to get a job at a bail bonds company. That friend wrote a fraudulent bond for him for $100,000. He was let out of jail and went on the run. He is also wanted for being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

McLeroy was a key component of Jody Thompson's evasion from police after he escaped from prison.
