The shooting took place in a parking lot outside the Valley Liquor Mini Mart. The liquor store is located near Mission Valley Resorts
According to police, three bounty hunters from Las Vegas were in San Diego searching for a man with several warrants. The bounty hunters stopped at the liquor store and ran into the suspect, according to police.
Officers were sent to the liquor store after a fight broke out between the man and the bounty hunters. Police told NBC 7/39 that during the fight, the suspect seemed to be gaining control of the bounty hunter's gun, and a shot was fired soon after. Police said the bullet hit the hand of the security guard, who had come over from Mission Valley Resorts to help after the fight began.
"The security guard was on the passenger side of the vehicle," San Diego police Lt. Sharon McNair told NBC 7/39. "He opened the passenger door to go in. The biggest struggle was [taking place] on the driver side, where the bounty hunter and the suspect were. The security guard opened up the passenger side in an attempt to help the bounty hunter when he was shot."
Police said the bounty hunters were within their rights to take the man into custody.
The suspect had apparently crossed the borders of multiple states, reported NBC 7/39. According to the bounty hunters, he is facing prosecution for his third felony. They also said several charges have been filed against him in Nevada. He may also face a charge of assault with a deadly weapon for the incident in Mission Valley.
The security guard and the wanted man were treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital for additional treatment. Both of them are expected to recover from their injuries.
