Well I stand corrected Bill ! Flame, my apologies sir, you were right, I was wrong.

Just FYI, here is a link to the German assault rifle that is the predecessor of the AK-47.

If my 'tongue in cheek'... 'flip' answers are a bit too much... just say so and I will remove my posts... sometimes I do get a bit.......... uh............. strange, for which, I apologize.

However, in my defense... sometimes the questions and answers, even the ones I don't put on here... get a bit strange and it evokes my like response.

For the record, Kalshnikov's first name was Mikhail. (I think I spelled that right) I would tell you how I know that, but then I would have to kill you. ;-) He was a general in the Soviet army (tanks I think) Here's one for the final jeopardy bonus round.. What does the "S" stand for in AK-47S???

Designates a folding stock to reduce overall size... I think the Russian paratroopers carried this version.

Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov was a tank driver and a mechanic as well as the developer of the weapon. I think his first design was passed over for an SKS designed weapon although later adopted...

Many, many, years ago when I was a young, new, wet-behind-the-ears Lieutenant in the Army, the Platoon Sergeant told me that when it came to weapons there were two kinds of people; shooters and hunters. A shooter was someone who knew all of the technical specifications of the weapon and the ammo. A hunter was someone who could use the weapon and actually hit his target. Since we had just arrived in Vietnam, he told me he would take the hunter any day over the shooter! Very wise words from a very wise and well-seasoned (on his third tour) NCO.

I agree 100% But the hunter does need to know some of the basics. Im not trying to come off as a show off here, I wasn't planned on being quizzed I was mainly here to help someone with firearms not the history etc.

Dang. I type out a very in depth reaponse only to find the fun was over. Someday I'll get to put some of my useless knowledge to use...

Eta: Something perhaps the group didnt know. TASER will give a credit for your x-26 device toward the purchase of an x2. The longer you wait the less credit you will receive. The xrep is no longer available for domestic law enforcement sales and they plan to slow the production of the x26 in 2013 to push everyone to the x2. The x26 can be in any condition, working or not.

Bill,

Your witty and smart a$$ posts always put a smile on my face. Please keep it up. It helps relieves some of the daily stress in ours and especially my humble existence.

The only thing I can add to this discussion is what I learned from what I saw in "The Boys in Company C."

Something to do with the difference between a "weapon" and a "gun."

I heard the same line in 1961.... on the rifle range, when I was trying to qualify with my trusty... M-1 garand... I think that line has been around for a very long time... there is another line that is similar... but relates, for the most part to another "gun"... "It ain't the size of the wand, it's the magic in the magician"... pretty much the same message....

... and the fact that you listened is very likely one of the reasons you got back to the 'world', Randall.... 8)
