Hello Everyone,

I'll get right to the point, this is more of a private investigator question. My best friends mom was taken care of by her grandmother from her early years on. She has never known who her father is and her mom never told her till the day she passed away. She only has a copy of the birth certificate (the one that only includes her dat and place of birth from the hospital). Is there ANY way to track this info back and her to find out her father and see if can find out if hes still around or etc?

Thanks,
Rick

PS- She cant afford a private investigator or she would have hired one by now. This is why Im trying to help her out.

Rick, she can go to the county of birth and request to see the record archives and back into the information that way. She should say she is doing a genealogy study and not mention she is trying to identify birth parents. Not knowing the situation, these records could have been sealed and her grandmother may have adopted her.

Becasue of ID theft and terrorist threats, at least in California, you have to present valid ID and have a valid reason to request birth record information.

We get a lot of people in our office with applications for copies of birth or death certs. Those apps have to be notarized and then still have to past the county records people scrutiny.

AS far as searching the archives, I don't know what they would require.

You may want to start with Ancestry.com. You may get some leads from there.

Another avenue is the Social Security Administration. They maintain the birth records including parents names that were originally provided when the SSN was applied for/issued.

I have helped adopted people locate birth parents this way, as sometimes when the SSA is contacted about changing a persons name they neglect to update their records to change from birth parents to adopted parents.

Another little trade secret revealed here on the FRN
