The brand name, Hi-Point, is negatively associated with gangs, drug dealers, and your avg run of the mill thugs around here.
They are cheap in price, quality, and design. They also have problems with jams, misfires, and feeding.
I respectfully suggest that you buy a quality .45 for duty purposes, rather than put your life on the line with such a poor quality weapon.
Just my 2cents worth.

I knew this was going to come up. I know that people consider Hi-Points the new Sat nite special.
They are not a bryco/Jennings. They are well made, but ugly and some people don't like their feel. My has never jammed. My Hi-point 9mm did, but only after running a box of dirty chinese ammo thru it.
I have six guns and my two duty weapons are my snub .38 and my CZ-52 (which shoots a 7.62x25- BOOM!).
I can only carry what I have qualified on. I didn't qual on my HP 45 because at the time I did not have an extra mag. So I'm not using it as a duty weapon. But I would not have a problem doing so.

If you are confident in it, then that's all that matters. Weaponry is all about personal skill and confidence.
I was merely parroting what I have been told by my local gun dealers here, cops, and various weapons magazines such as "Guns and Ammo".
Now if they have resolved thier issues, then so be it. However, I am superstitious: Once something malfunctions on me I get rid of it; If a product gets poor reviews, I don't buy it.

been doing a little reading on that CZ. Looks good, mostly good reviews... only thing bad I've found is not about the weapon but about certain manufacturers of the ammo with pretty good reviews on the winchester ammo.
from what I've read I am thinknig about picking one up. don't think I'd carry it for personal defense as the penetration would worry me (though I think the round might make a really good military round due to it's armor piercing qualities).
Just a few things on the pistol itself... due to weak firing pins they are prone to breakage so you may want to pick up an after market machined one. Also the korean rollers in some of em tend to wear down and will damage your barrel costing about 75 bucks for a replacement as well as bad rollers. Also gotta be careful with the decocker because once worn, they have been known to fire when decocking.
Check out this website (not affiliated with it in anyway) as they have some info on the CZ as well as the known issues and offer aftermarket accessories and parts.

It seems that a lot of people bash Hi-Points. Usually those people have never owned or even fired one. I will agree that they are ugly and built like a brick. Some people dislike the ergonomics, but I have picked up Barettas that felt a lot worse to me. I think the price makes a lot of people nervous. I mean, how good can a $100 dollar gun be? But the fact is, when you pull the trigger, they go "bang!"
I do not own one myself, but have fired one belonging to a friend. It would not be my first choice mainly because I prefer to carry concealed, but I would never fault anyone for carrying one.

absolutely replace the firing pin if you get a CZ 52. And DO NOT use military surplus ammo in them. The 7.62x25 mil surp ammo was made for a machine gun and is a lot hotter, dirtier too.
Use Sellior and Bellot production ammo (Winchester buys from them and repackages it) and for hollow point you can get it from Portugal (FNM I think) available from makarov.com.
The CZ52 is a great, single action, boomer with low recoil (roller bearings in the slide) and muzzle energy rivalling the .357 mag! BTW 7.62x25 ammo in hardball will defeat level 2 body armor and below...

The added advantage of the CZ52 is that if you have a C&R Lic from the ATF they can be UPS'd to your door, no gun dealer needed
