Scott, was a little while back but thanks to the advice from you and Bill, I always keep 2 old long sleeved shirts in my car, blankets, basic first aid, and the other basic stuff you guys suggested. It was a 6`0, 320lb man who was upset at having to be transported in the back of a civic.

Half way enroute, he became verbal and started yelling, then he started spitting. I put up a folder behind my right side so I could still see him in my mirror and my partner got in the back seat next to him. As I pulled into the detention center, he hurled all over the back of my car and my partner. Was not a good night, but the bondsman I handled the case for paid me extra to get the car cleaned. Was very greatful.....

Just didn't feel it would be best to put a pillow case over the guys head (prefer to do things as professionally as possible). The laundry net might be a good idea though to keep in the car.

We had a spitter once. We put a dusk mask on his face (the kind you tie in case there was a latex allergy to the stretchy straps). It stopped the spitting but he kept trying to bite my partner. So we started using a grinder face shield from the hardware store.

If they spit, it goes right in front of their face. If they vomit, it runs down on their shirt. If they try to bite, the shield hits their nose.

I suppose a person could spray paint that shield too, so they could only see out the sides.

My issue with the dust mask is the defendat aspirating their own vomit. We have all ad defendants that get so anxious the closer you get to the jail, that they get physically ill.

This now leads us to a previous topic which needs revisiting: In transit Declared Medical Emergencies.
If, while in transit, your prisoner either verbally declares a medical emergency or simply physically develops or engages in one...such as seizures, what should you do ?
A) Pull over, call 911
B)Immediately transport to hospital
C)Ignore symptoms, proceed to jail, let them deal with it ?
I know what Scott M.'s answer is, because he taught me, but for you new folks, I'm curious to see what y'all think.

Call the jail your on the way to and have the ambulance meet there. Lol
Probably wrong for most cases, but at least you have already turned him in when they come for him..

Luvonda,

I don't remember (old timer disease-crs) if it is an actual independent, single topic or if it was part of a discussion buried within a thread.

My point, and perhaps I should have been far more specific, is that this "event" for lack of a better title, has been discussed before somewhere on here in a past article.

The reason why I remember the discussion is because I wrote it and asked for advice after the fact. I was curious to see if the course of action I had taken was indeed the correct one. I was basically conducting an "after action critique: what did I do right, what did I do wrong, what could I have done better ?"

My particular situation at that time was that a fugitive I had re-apprehended in 1 city and had to extradite to another started claiming a heart attack app. 20 mins. from the jail on the interstate. I specifically asked him if he was making an official declaration of a medical emergency, he replied "yes".

I wont finish that story as I don't want to give my answer away. But in the ensuing conversation that my question raised, alot of people weighed in, but it was Scott M. who laid out all of the legalities, rights, issues, and liabilities. His knowledge pretty much laid the foundation for the policy now in place for declared emergencies on the road that I teach to new BEA's.

Perhaps it might be better if 1 of the moderators split this topic ? Just an idea ? I think the answers we get will be valuable and hopefully of some benefit to new BEA's down the road.

Snake,

Once you have surrendered the prisoner, you're done...so it wouldn't be your responsibility to call anyone.

Ruffin,
as you have the particulars and who was involved, can you narrow it down to a time?
Then one of the Mods can split and merge the pertinent posts . . . .

edited to add . . .

If we know the time frame we can search both yours and Scott's posts during that time period and get to the thread
