Everybody pretty much covered it already so I'll just add that I'm not feelin' the mask thing at all (well said by the way Madi). Also, I second the "always call LE" thing. Just a couple hours ago, my partner and I were out visiting three locations in one city. Same PD with same phone number but we called in and then called "clear" for each individual location. Just a good habit.

Prayers going out to all involved, it is a very tragic event for the agents, families, law enforcement and our industry. I am a firm believer and teach about notification every four hours, and notification of clearing the area with LE when done. I find it very important to be well marked as surety recovery agents to cut down on confusion at a time such as a 911 call or when a patrol officer comes across us that didn't get notification of recovery agents working the area. It's never going to be a perfect system; we can only work with what we have, and learn from situations like these to avoid another incident.

I'm seeing another issue of concern with this. I thought there was more time in between when the first officers were there to when the second set of officers got called out.
If in fact there was only really a matter of 10 minutes between the first call at 1:53am and the second call at 2:02am.
#1- The first set of officers responded THAT quickly and cleared the location that FAST? #2- I was a dispatcher, the dispatcher should have seen the previous call at that location and informed the officers of the situation. If they didnt, there could be some liability on the department as well. #3- The initial officers that responded should have recognized the location going out again and responded, or at least communicated with the new responding officers of the situation.
Sounds like many mistakes were made.. it will be interesting to see how this turns out.

It was not that close between times they hit the location .. there was an easy 3... 4 ... 5 hour gap between ..
The 4 x 12 tour responded the first time.. then the Midnight Shift ..
the Midnight Tour received the 911 Home Invasion call after 2 am .. the next Police shift did not know they were there earlier..

As the news reports state .. the time between the calls differ from what was told by one of the agents that were there to his Father that I work with ..
Originally when they hit the house there were 4 agents.. one being the son of the owner of the bail bond company I work for... his son got a call about his wife giving birth and rushed to the hospital after they hit the target house the first time..
.. the rest of his now 3 man team went back later after the initial hit without him to the targets house which was originally found to be unoccupied. .. and that is when the residents of the apartment apparently called 911 ..
I am heading to the office within the hour.. and hope to find out more about the time line.. and what really happened from the people involved.

Jacksonville sheriffs office just did a press conference 1. there was less than a 15 minute gap from when the first set of officers left and the 911 call. 2. the bail agents had reflective clothing identifying themselves as surety agents, and badges. the bondsman did absolutely nothing wrong, and took every precaution including call police for assistance. this was absolutely the fault of the sheriffs office, it was miscommunication between the officers of different zones, as well as the communication between the officers and dispatch. the officer did not give them a warning, did not identify himself, or give them any commands to follow. He just snuck up behind them and opened fire. I really hope he looses his job and is found guilty of something criminal. Its not fair, that these guys do everything correctly and one of them loses their life. its very unfortunate http://www.wokv.com/news/news/local/jac ... las/nCmhk/

I'm anxiously awaiting the 24/7 P R machine to start to work on behalf of the police on this one..... Thanks Jeff for giving a little balance to this story before we start assuming the worst from our own....

Thanks for the update and good to hear that the bond agents were in the right in this case, but very unfortunate that the officer failed to identify his target before shooting... They could have been FBI or any other agency on scene that officer could have shot without regard to their markings or badges. Sounds like a HUGE lapse in communication/dispatch and amoungst the officers. Very Sad!

And the bondsman had 4 small children. Very very sad, I hope this forces the Florida department of financial services to approve badges for bail bondsman. Even though it would not have helped in this case, it show's the danger of friendly fire is real.
