You provided a very good response to an ignorant individual. My question would be how in the hell can he address bail bondsmen and bail enforcement agent duties and training when his state has not let bondsmen work for more than forty years. Yet he himself only has about twenty years law enforcement experience, so other than his bogus story about an interaction with a bounty hunter what does he really know about this industry.

Great response Tony.. They should make his department responsible for finding these people or paying the fees to the court.. might change his attitude a little!! Or better yet, tax the residents & businesses in the state to make up for the deficit fees not paid, see how long it takes them to vote bail bonds back INTO their state!

David I considered adding a similar point but I felt my response was long enough already.
I am glad that everyone responded with excellent facts to counter his and others opposition to surety bail.
We must now continue to educate and "police" our own profession to eliminate the negative aspects in bail today. If we have time, maybe we should have a discussion in Vegas about this and to develop a plan to counter the mis information that is put out about bail recovery.

I get going on the profit thing because this is a business. We are not babysitters nor do we offer state and county programs although i do offer advise on some of them and will go out of my way to help find information on programs if asked. As to being held responsible for actions no body in there right mind would make themselves responsible for Future action of a person.

Well it is not showing all of the comments. My issue with Dr. Marks, regardless if he is a DR. or not, as his name is in quotations with no credentials to indicate his or her specific discipline, is that he has a stake in this game. I am tired of the pompous responses anti bail by people who purport to be disinterested by standers when they are making a living off of pre-trial release just as we are, but somehow, our income is distasteful. The federal government funds pre trial release as well as numerous studies completed by criminal justice schools so they absolutely have a dog in this fight. The Vera Institute originated in the 1960's as a result of indigent defendants in NY getting lost in the system and actually serving more time in jail pre trial than they would have if convicted of their charges. This was a PRIVATE response to a public failure, and was long over due. The fact of the matter is that the judiciary failed the defendants. It did not take a system overhaul to have an administrative judge notified that a particular defendant had reached the 14 day mark, the 30 day mark, etc, and the option was there to convert the case and release the defendant. Like most programs, the initial motivation has morphed into a bureaucratic nightmare that demands feeding. To be correct, pre trial release is not a consistent system either intrastate or interstate, and has many levels of service or lack of it.
Lastly, Dr. Marks' response to victim's rights is deplorable and a further indicator of the focus on their programs as a single segment of criminal justice absent the knowledge or class to address the entire system as a whole, recognizing the cause and effect ratio of every action.
As a footnote, pre trial release advocates all utilize the same argument of an indigent defendant held in jail because he cannot afford bail. This is complete bull shit and disregards several factors: 1) The defendant made a conscious decision to break the law (cause and effect) 2) The defendant's prior history plays a large part in if his family will help hom or not, he may have burned that bridge numerous times before. 3)As previously stated, the Judiciary has the authority to release these people, and they do, all of the time, so no real issue exists and is only fabricated to support their position. The real issue is that they do not believe anyone should make money on some defendant's mistake, but they really need a mirror, because every single person that works in the criminal justice trades is there because some dumb bastard made a mistake.

Any one else contacted to do a story of what we do and what obstacles we face. I would sure like to pass this on to one of you that have the gift of words, i am way to country and my reputaion with our LEO's is good as i can pick up the phone an have a officer in a matter of minutes (I have worked very hard for this over the years) so i do not incounter some of the problems with LEO's that others have to face. If any of you would like to do this i will give them your contact information, just let me know.
