In CA, CCWs are issued for self defense purposes only. The training you get to obtain a CCW spells out how and when you can use your firearm.

I heard a rumor, that some CA sheriffs will not issue a ccw if they know you want to use it for bail recovery work. Just what I heard and I have no diffinitive proof of such policies.

Each state defines what they consider brandishing or assault. I am not familiar with Ohio firearm laws.

I know some recovery agents that will not carry a firearm at all while doing recovery work. Others carry expose and never have to draw it. I know a couple that have weapons drawn as soon as they get out of the vehicle.

What is legal, is what the beat cop that comes on the scene says is legal to do.

If Ohio requires training in the escalation force, then they should follow those procedures.

That is absolutely a true statement... I have several statements that I drop quite often....

Here's a little 'speezack' advice... free and worth every penny. 8)

1. "Just because it is legal, doesn't make it right... and visa-verse."

2. "Just because it is in the code of the state does not make it enforceable"

3. "Many judges legislate from the bench, rather than judge."

4. "You ain't in Kansas anymore."

5. "State laws although state wide, differ within each jurisdiction."

6. "THE RULE OF THUMB IS... THERE IS NO RULE OF THUMB."

Always remember that everyone is consumed by their own personal station in life and each sincerely believes that they are the consummate authority on whatever position they hold... power and control are the key words and whomever, wherever or whatever you are attempting to accomplish will ultimately be influenced by the lowest common denominator involved... court clerks, prison guards and yes... even bondsmen and recovery people... will endeavor to make you believe that they know more than the highest judge... and you better know how to handle that scenario cause it will come up daily in this business.

and the last one that I say all the time.................... "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" but in reality and reading between the lines... you DO understand that I actually mean... "You had better damn well, pay attention to the man behind the curtain... cause that is where everything will probably come from...."

Do not go into a situation with blinders on... a horse uses them well, us humans need to be fully aware in order to survive in life...

I have a book to recommend, "The Art of War" written hundreds of years ago by Sun Tzu... who
Quote:
"suggests the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment."

... read the above quote and give it some deep thought, then read the book and put it on your shelf for future reference.

Sorry to get a bit over on this but it is so, so important in our business... I think these words do apply to the original question, "showing their gun"... ok, I'm done.

In Santa Clara County our fine Sheriff Smith wont issue CCWs even to her own Correctional Officers. Oh yah unless you happen to be of some political value to her.

I have carried concealed for 30 years or more and i have had to use it 4 times, unholstered and drawn 3 times and took out a knee cap once. I carry a 45acp and have always used a 45 of some make. I go to our range every week end for a few hours if i can.

A great trainer I had says, " Its not enough that you be right in what you do, but be able to effectivly articulate why you are right". (will save your a$$!) Knowing the laws is your best defense, which you will need even if you are well within the law.

I would suggest that you contact the Attorney General's Office or the Ohio Poilce Training Commission for the information that you are looking for. Ask for the the written documents, not the word of mouth. Good luck with your quest.

Thanks everybody, I think I found what I was looking for. It seems that you’re firearm is a necessary part of doing the job (for most) and using it as an arrest tool,,, is sort of a do it in the dark, unwritten, pull and hope, kinda thing….. I understand the situation that you guys/ girls are in and as I said before, I wouldn’t do it. Good luck be safe.
