I think the discipline, dedication and extensive training that goes into this sort of thing is what is impressive. I didn't particularly like it either. I literally wore out several pairs of brogans on the parade field at PI... The other day I got out my old M1 Garrand (Sir!!, 30 caliber, semi-automatic, clip fed, gas operated, shoulder weapon, 9.5lbs, sir!!) to clean it up a bit and it brought back memories... that was what I was issued back in '61... (we didn't get the M-14 for several years... still had the BAR in service too and I never had the pleasure of an M-16 and now the M-4, wow!) ... we drilled with the M-1 and I showed my grandson some of the rifle drills... funny how you never forget that stuff... the corps really does indoctrinate you... I even fold my skivvies the same way... (that's underwear for you uninformed)
Damn that rifle is heavy.... and one other thing... never call it a 'gun'!!!... old saying.... "This is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for killing, this is for fun..." you know the rest.
