Bail bondsman fatally shot inside Rancho Santa Margarita home [Updated]
July 18, 2010 | 1:47 pm
The owner of a bail bond agency was shot and killed inside a Rancho Santa Margarita home, authorities said Sunday.

Just before midnight Saturday, 49-year-old Dean Patrick Maldonado of Newport Beach arrived at the residence of a woman he knew and entered the house in the 21300 block of Stonetower Lane through an unlocked sliding glass backdoor, Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said.

The woman, about 45, had a 51-year-old male guest with her, and neighbors reported hearing the three screaming before multiple shots were fired, Amormino said. Maldonado, who runs Dean Maldonado Bail Bonds, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The relationship of the three was unknown. "What led up to the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made at this point," Amormino said.

According to his Facebook page, Maldonado was single and had at least two children.

-- Corina Knoll

[Updated at 1:31 p.m.: The home is listed in public records as the residence of Linda Shaw, a personal trainer who owns and operates a business called Body Balance.

Maldonado and Shaw were friends on Facebook and MySpace. In a July 11 post, Maldonado wrote, "The Future is So Exciting With Her." Shaw replied, "Well put :). I feel the same xo."

Shaw also left comments on Maldonado's MySpace page, and on July 16 posted a heart graphic and the words "I love you."

Maldonado's last entry on his Facebook page was on Thursday at 6:27 p.m. It said, "I'm a Sucker For Love."]

Hmmmmmmm . . . sounds like the part of the dude being a bondsman coulda been left outta this story all together.
Were it not for the "filler" part of the story one wold think that the dude had gone there to do a recovery. Well, I guess he kinda did :-( It just did not turn out very well.

Tony, does Cali have a "Castle Doctrine" ?

I'm glad to see that his being a bail agent WASN'T relevant. This is in my neck of the woods, about 25 miles south to be exact. In fact, I sent Maldonado a Facebook friend request and never received a reply.

Nope,

No Castle Doctrine in CA. We must retreat if we have the opportunity to do so before using ANY force.

It is if, you can only defend yourself if there is no way for you to leave or escape. I was recently in a situation, not bail related and it got bad.

I can't explain any further as it is being "tried" right now.

Then I am grateful! that I live in Arkansas. No Retreat . . . No Surrender
