Thank you Gene. That is exactly what I am talking about as well as filling out a very detailed information sheet that is filed in the folder with the Bond for future reference (if needed). Oft times I get info that the Jail has not been privy to. I ask LOTS of questions

Now with that said most open warrants are public record and the information thereto can normally be secured from court records, i.e. charging documents that include his address, ssan, dob, along with copies of the arresting agency’s internal reports that document the circumstances that caused the arrest. These reports sometimes contain the subject’s next of kin information and prior arrest history.

Again, not in CA. Each state has their own rules and laws on what is public information. I have never had a local LE agency provide copies of internal reports or even the arrest report.

But this is Caifornia. We're special.

I think this is the bottom line on the thread.

Virginia has started holding back info on the defendant in certain jurisdictions during the bond process, however, some magistrates allow certain bondsmen access, some LE also allow and provide certain info and some don't... it is as Tony says... some are bail friendly, some are not.

Even though we all are supposed to gather any and all info ourselves and take pictures ourselves... it is always, always helpful if LE decides to provide info on the defendant... I never turn down any info that is offered... having said this...

Do I need to say this again................. the rule of thumb is............... "there are no rules of thumb."

I will say this......... if you are fortunate enough to gain info from these sources....... you absolutely "PROTECT AND CERTAINLY DO NOT DIVULGE YOUR SOURCE".

This a is related but a little off subject. But it will drive home the overall point of this thread.

We had a client that was murdered a couple of yerars ago. She was shot while driving home from a bowling allery by a former neighbor and friend, who was also a client of ours.

They were trying to kill her boyfriend and hit her 3 times in the shoulder and neck.

So we had her out on bail for a theft charge in a nearby county. I contacted the local pd handling the case. I ask for confirmation of her death.

Mind you, I already had a copy of her DL, our own photo, DOB, SS#, address, fathers name, etc.

Still local LE would not give me anything in writing confirming her death. They said that all they would do is refer me to the press report.

Well, being California, I knew that would not be sufficient for the DA and judge. Also, the DA will not help us prove our own motion that the defendants FTA is because she is dead.

So I contacted the county coroners office. For $25 I would be able to get a complete copy of the coroners report.

Now that report had DOB, SS#, DL information and more importantly, the details of the shooting from the police report.

It also reported that she had cocaine in her system and described in detail the wounds and the type of weapon used in the shooting.

So a detective will not confirm the identity of the victum but, for $25 I get all that.

Only in California!

Yesterday, in the Virginia Senate.... the following bill was PASSED !!!!!

This excerpt from an email received by me tells it all... please also read the thread about "Preservation of Bail" on this site for a full update on yesterdays activities.

"I'll start with the great news - HB1255 has passed the full Senate!

This bill, which is nearly guaranteed to become law at this point, will make bail agents "defacto officers" of the court, allowing you access to criminal history records of defendants. This right, which you will share with police, Commonwealth Attorneys and Magistrates, is one which will provide strategic tools for determining risk factors and tracking skips. More importantly, the strategic importance of this change will make our work next year easier."

Related to information available............ this is tremendous for Virginia bondsmen.... now if we can only get past the PreTrial debacle we may have a chance at the future here in the Old Dominion.
