My proudest moment was the capture of a husband and wife, coast to coast, in the same weekend, for two different bondsman. I flew to Washington State, leaving early Friday afternoon, got the husband on ten warrants out of Prince George's County, Maryland, flew him back and left the jail at 3am Sunday morning. Went to the University of Maryland at 7am and locked up his wife in the dining hall she worked in, and took her to Annapolis for another bondsman. Then I went to bed, the end. :)

About a year ago, I did this bond for this guy on DV charges. While needless to say, he FTA on the bond. So I started to look for him for about a week. He was no where to be found including his wife. The only thing left at there house was the two pitbulls that were in the basement. So animal control took them.

About a couple of days later, I found where the wife was staying. At that time she said they went there ways and he was already hooked up with a new lady. She said, she couldn't remember her last name, but remembered her first name and had no idea where they was staying.

So I put pressure on her, then out of the blue she remembered her last name. That was all I needed to track him down.

The next night, one of my sons and I went to the address where he was living. We found the car he was driving, so we knew we found him. I told my son to watch the window of the apartment, while I went to the door. I knock several times before his girlfriend answered the door. That's when my son said to me, that there is two people in the apartment.

When his new girlfriend answered the door, I told her who I was and why I was there. She told me he wasn't there, But I could come in and look around. I look around in the apartment and came up empty. I ask her, "what time he will be back?" She said, " She didn't know for sure and that he dosen't really stay there all the time."

So, I left the apartment and told my son lets ago. My son said, " Dad he's there, I saw two people moving around in the apartment." I said to my son, " I look around the whole apartment and found notthing." He said, " I'm telling you, he's there."

So, I told my son, well lets get in the car and will drove on the other side of the apartments, park the car and walk back. That's what we did and soon as we got back to the apartment, there he was looking out the blind at us.

I told my son to watch the window and I went back to the apartment door and started knocking again. After the fifty knocks no one would answer the door. So I called the local police and told them we were going to enter the apartment again. Just in case, something bad happen. So, I knock one final time and told them that the door wasn't going to stay on much longer unless someone open it in the next ten mins. I have never had to kick a door in before. This was going to be the first time ever and the only one I ever had too.

While ten mins. went by and the door came off. I went in, went right up stairs where he was looking out the window. He wasn't anywhere upstairs except his girlfriend sleeping in the bed. Boy did she wake up fast..... She looked at me and ask how I got in? While by that time, one of my employees and the police officer was there by that time. We all look ever where in the apartment an came up with notthing.

So the police officer and I was asking the new girlfriend questions about where my defendant was at. While we was doing that, My employee was sick with a cold, so he went to their frig to see if they had a bottle of water in there and when he opened the frig, there was our guy sitting inside the frig for over a half an hour. Boy, when my employee open the frig and saw this guy sitting there, It scared him so bad that he crap he pants. Cause all the officer and I heard was. Get on the F$$ken ground now. So we handcuff him and my son ran him to the car, while the officer and I was lauughing at my employee for crapping his pants. I knew he was sick with the flu and things, but I didn't realize it was that bad.

Until this day, We still tease him about that, but we always check the frig now.

LOLOLO.........

Oh well... here goes...

first of all... "vconwell", your gonna get blasted for using upper case letters... "IT'S LIKE YELLING ON THE NET!!" and it tends to upset certain people... although I could care less...

Now... story... well.... I had a 5K skip and another bondsman had 20K on the same guy... so we pooled our info... I had the SQ's brother as an indemnitor and I had a fair idea where he was.... so my 'buddy' and I rode into NC and dropped by the local 'very small town LE' to give them a heads up on the possible deal.... now some LE will actually work with bondsman... and these were in that category... they were all sitting around the chiefs office drinking coffee like in the movies... all decked out with their big shoulder holsters, etc.... we talked a bit and one of the PC detectives jumped up and said... "hey, I know where your indemnitor is located... and it is a local crack house that we are looking to hit... so why don't I ride over there with you and maybe we can take care of business together..." that was certainly fine with us... so we drove to the location and when we pulled up in the yard.... well... have you ever turned the light on in a shanty... and all the roaches run for cover........ same deal.......... there was no grass in the yard... filled with Merc./ big black darked out SUV's and Lexus... etc... you know the deal... I figured this was home or at least the meeting place for some of the big boys... and frankly, being old and fat... I didn't want to particularly get in a shootout with a bunch of crack dealers.... (besides, my wife only lets me have one bullet for my gun   ) anyway, we walk up on the porch... and the front door is open already... this big ugly black dude is standing there glaring at my lilly white face... and he says "u crackers need somethin"... and the LE looks around him and sees a 'short' barrel shotgun leaning against the wall beside a sofa filled with more big ugly black dudes... (for clarification... I don't care what color you are... I approach all participants with the same attitude... as mentioned in another post... you are all equally worthless) Well, the detective steps around the dude in the door... pulls his 'piece' and walks right in the room toward the shotgun... (later he told me when he saw the 'illegal' weapon it gave him probable cause to enter the dwelling... anyway... everyone in the room (maybe 4 or 5) jump up and start to run... all but the brother I was looking for... he just stood still...

I approached him and he agreed to walk outside and talk to me... he thought he was under arrest and I did not tell him different... although I never made that statement... I told him we needed the location of his brother so we could "resolve" the FTA issue on the bond and so he and the brother would not have to pay the $25,000 to the courts.... He 'agreed' to getting in our car and talking and the LE said that would be fine cause he had his hands full... the LE had called for backup when we got to the scene and they had arrived and were cuffing a bunch of folks... so us leaving with this guy was fine with them... (we had searched the house and did not find the SQ...)

I got in the back seat of my buddies car with the brother (indemnitor) and my buddy takes off down a narrow country road all the while screaming about how he was gonna "waste" this guy in the back with me.... I played the "good guy, bad guy" scenario and whispered to the brother that the guy driving was F'in crazy and unless he gave up some very good intel on his brother.... he may very well end up like my buddy said... well, this guy was scared shtless... and what he told us was the cell number of his brothers girlfriend... which we ran past our BEA... who found that the location of the phone was central NY state... we continued to 'grill' the guy... in a very humane but harsh... manner... and told him we were gonna turn him loose but if the intel turned out to be bogus... we would... "be back".

The BEA felt they had enough intel to make the trip so at about 4:30pm the BEA with two 'helpers' took off for NY... at 6AM they called us and told us they had the guy and were heading back and to meet them to transfer custody and turn him in.... they had found the house, covered front and back doors... knocked and got an answer... the SQ had jumped out the rear window into the waiting arms of our BEA... great job... good ending.... and the DA and Circuit court judge in the jurisdiction that we returned him to... can't believe we got this guy... he was a real bad dude and we came out on top on this one..............

There is another story that is pretty neat... rather than post it here... you may want to check out another thread... entitled:
"Bail Bond Company Advertising" and/or look for the "gold tooth" scenario... posted 10/9/08

I have had a couple incidents which were notable. One of the first recoveries in which I was involved was where I was one of 4 BEAs out on the hunt. We hit a house where the FTA was ID'd to reside. This was an illegal who had actually given the court a phony name. Our two big guys hit the front door (knocking) while I dutifully followed the lead agent around to watch the rear. As we walked toward the yard behind house, we saw the fugitive standing in the back yard with another male (his brother) and he was holding a knife. This brought an immediate response from my lead agent and he pulled his weapon out slick as..well you know.. and gave his commands. As if I had done it for years, I walked over and cuffed him and it was over. We later realized that the fugitive was actually in his back yard slicing tomatoes but the fact that he was holding the knife posed an immediate danger to us and the right to pull the weapon.
Truthfully, I have not yet had any big confrontations with FTAs because we have always been prepared, adequately staffed and trained to what our roles were. Being a woman, I can usually get the front door open where some of the more intimidating guys have less luck.
On another case, the only FTA I have lost (ran off) so far, once a visual was achieved, was a long haul trucker. We lost the FTA out the back door into the swamp behind his home (dont ask, too long of a story) and he got away even in spite of getting the LE involved in a manhunt. The FTA, being a long haul trucker, decided not to take the chance to return to the east coast and his bond wasn't all that high to go after him west of the Mississippi. Fortunately I was able to find his trucking broker and made it impossible for him to get loads. He finally gave up and turned himself in shortly afterwards. It cost him far more to run than it would have been for him to be a man and give himself up. As they say, they can run.. but all the roads lead to a dead ends.

We all have stories to tell, and for now I am trying to weed through mine to find my best and worst.

If there were any way we could get that fact through the thick and sometimes non existent heads of the defendants, your friendly BEA's would all be out of business cause everyone would show up in court... of course, you need not worry about that ever happening...
