Since you are not afforded any special rights being a BEA would you share some of your personal feelings and experiences regarding your use of firearms during your recovery experiences?

I am more or less trying to find out from your personal experiences do you tend to take your gun everywhere with you????? Like places a normal civilian wouldn't? Maybe lets say a mall ?

I think that some BEA's would find it difficult to leave the firearm in the car if you saw your mark walk in somewhere where you generally couldn't take it .

I know in the state of Missouri if you have a CCW you can carry your firearm anywhere except on a bus with out being charged with a felony however if you are discovered to have a gun in a Mall the most they could do is ask you to leave at which that point if you don't then you could be charged with trespassing.

And knowing that would leave me to believe that most BEA's would carry their weapon concealed on there body into a public building.

Also I was watching the show "America's Hardest Bounty Hunters" is it typical practice to approach fugitives with guns drawn as seen on that show seeing how a regular civilian cannot do that?

Thanks for your anwsers and advice............(I tried the search function however I thought this might require a more detailed anwser then I could find )

All of us have our own opinions, methods, and feelings. I have a CCW in my state, and I follow my state's laws. So, pretty much, I have a weapon within reach anywhere I go where it is legal to do so. I never felt it necessary to carry until I got into this biz, so again, it is up to personal preference and state laws if a person "carries" or not, and how they use their weapon. I personally use mine for defense rather than offense, but that is my preference.

A: No.

A: Carrying privileges, regardless of whether your state is open or concealed or mixed, is up to each JURISDICTION (not state). The laws of each area we operate in dictate to us whether or not we can legally carry. Why would you carry a gun into a mall ? Civilians are not protected by any laws from lawsuits, criminal charges, etc. WE ARE NOT COPS. If a shooting does occur somewhere, and you return "panic fire" and YOU shoot the wrong person, or injure an innocent third party via ricochet, shoot throughs, etc....then you're going to jail for a very, very long time.

A) Why do you need a firearm to execute an apprehension ? This question, more than your others, scares the hell out of me. Bail skips are still citizens.....they are "innocent until proven guilty". Why are you going to brandish a fire arm at a fellow citizen who is not directly threatening your life or the lives of others at the time you apprehend them ?

A firearm is a tool..PERIOD. For our purposes it is strictly a DEFENSIVE tool, not a compliance tool. If you are that scared of this field or that co-dependent on a firearm, then I URGE you not to even get started. You have LIABILITY written all over you.

Carrying a LOADED INSTRUMENT OF DEATH is a tremendous responsibility and liability. Do you know that some BEA's have been arrested and sued, along with thier clients for merely touching thier firearms while interviewing occupants of a target house ? Cops are notorious for resting thier elbows on the butt of thier guns, or placing thier palms on thier butts or holsters. For cops, this is not an issue, but for BEA's it CAN BE A HUGE LIABILITY ISSUE. It's body language....what are you communicating to the person you are interviewing if you constantly touch your wepaon ? In some states its called terroristic threats, menacing, etc.

A) You're belief is incorrect. Again, depending on JURISDICTIONAL laws, most public buildings prohibit any weapons from thier premises. Schools, post offices, court houses, police departments, sheriff's dept's. hospitals, etc.

A) NO. Again, in most jurisdictions, this action will get you arrested, jailed, and sued. Most instances, your fugitive will be surrounded by uninvolved third parties. I can guarantee you, if you were after me, regardless of my past, if I have not given you any reason to be in fear of your life and you brandished a firearm around my loved ones, placing them in harm's way and traumatizing them..especially small children, I WOULD PRESS CHARGES AGAINST YOU, SUE YOU, AND YOUR BONDING COMPANY. Then, once I was released from jail........

Obviously you have not taken any BEA courses. A reputable professonal course teaches that although the def has missed his/her court date, they are a commodity. Bonding companies are retail outlets. like most companies, bonding companies rely on REPEAT customers to stay in business. How long do you think your client would stay in business if you scared all of the customers away ?

Obviously I haven't taken any courses as stated in my introduction............ I understand the seriousness of carring a weapon I have been licensed since I was able to obtain one. It was a simple question . I personally like Kathy would carry one regardless of circumstance due to the appearent nature of your business. As you say .......... You say you would only use it in defense......... the only way to do that is to have it on you.

Thanks for your reply though I take it you dont carry one due to this comment and that is way you decided to anwser the first question with a simple NO instead of just saying you don't carry one.

I reiterate, I carry my weapon as a defensive tool to be used only if I feel threatened. Whether I feel threatened on a personal or professional level is irrelevant in protecting myself by following my state laws. If I am threatened, I can defend myself.

If you are asking me, as a regular citizen, do I go armed when and where I can legally do so, ? The answer is yes, but not because of my job. I've been carrying as a civillian since I was 21....25 yrs now. Prior to that, when ordered to do so, I carried a sidearm and other weapons when in the Army at age 18-21.

I carry now for purposes of self-defense. I don't trust the general population, and never know when I might find myself in a defensive situation.

Regarding BEA work: I carry for self-defensive purposes only. But that's because my state is a pro-gun state and weapons are cheaper than beer....almost every male and several females either own a gun or carry one. But I generally wish I didn't have to simply because of all of the liabilities and risks involved with carrying one.

I enjoy guns as a recreational hobby...but when a hobby becomes a job...then its no longer enjoyable.

Man I just want to say that was the best awnser I could ever imagine coming from you!!!! I mean that Im glad you got what i was trying to say and didn't take offense to my statement.

I agree with you fully that you should never even give a client the impression of any threat from a weapon . I would never engage a situation with my gun drawn and thats why I found that show so amazing. It would be ashame if there was a miss fire and some one was harmed for any reason. I also agree with both you and Kathy on the point of carrying it for defense purposes only. Thats how all guns should be handled (except for those deer) ...............

Just to give you an example, I renewed my permit this past June. My permit # is 27805. That means that from 2 Jan-26 June: 27,805 permits had been issued for my county alone ! So what does this tell you ? If you double that, to get an estimate for the whole year, that means that an estimated 55,610 people in my county alone are legally licensed to carry a concealed weapon on them.

That's not counting all of the punk gang bangers, drug dealers, meth heads, crack junkies, etc.

Additionally, the def's we go after are becoming more and more violent.... I'm not even sure what the total industry deaths for this year are yet....Some bondsmen, who have done this kind of work for years, know thier clients or thier families, were too trusting and now are dead.

So I am looking forward to retirement, where I can hang my .45 up and trade it for my Trout rod....then the only thing I want to chase is the local Grandaddy of em all of every Trout hole in the country ....:)
