Folks,
This is definitely a sign of the times. If criminals are willing to shoot cops, then they will have no qualms about shooting us.
1) If you have vests, WEAR THEM. They are useless sitting on file cabinets, in trunks of the cars, in closets, etc. If you don't have one, GET ONE ! You can find them online, e-bay, local pd's may have used ones they will sell or even give you, etc.
2) Don't go by yourself.
3) Always do a leo check in/out. Just as important to call back and tell them when you are clearing thier jurisdiction.
4) If you have a gps tracking unit for pi cases, then engage it in your BEA cases as well. This way your family, partners, client..anyone..can track your movements while out in the field. Make sure they know the units log in and password.
5) Do phone/radio check ins at least hourly with loved ones, clients, etc. to advise of location and status.
These may sound like simple, common sense procedures...which to me they are....but I am horrified at the number of people in this field who possess a misguided romanticism of being the "lone ranger" moving like wraiths throughout thier ao's and not keeping anyone apprised of thier locations.
When training new people, 1 of my drills is "Agent Down!". I do this spontaneously in the middle of the country. We'll be riding along engaged in general chit chat and suddenly I'll yell out "agent down !" ...Naturally the rookie is confused...so I ask him for our exact physical location. Naturally they can't tell me because they haven't been paying attention to our routes. Now comes the lesson....everyone needs to know our exact whereabouts at any given point in case of emergency.
This lesson was drilled into me 20+ yrs ago as a rookie cop. My fto explained this lesson to me due to a then recent cop killing. An FTO and his rookie responded to a new subdivision that wasn't on the maps yet. The FTO went down in a domestic...the rookie had no idea where they were....the way his fellow officers found him was by sight and sound and radio...he moved his cop car to the highest open point, keeping the siren and lights going acting as a beacon for his fellow officers and resuce crews. Through this method they finally got to the rookie and the downed officer, but by that time it was too late. Too much time had been wasted in trying to locate them.
Case in point: The young deputy who was just killed in South Carolina. His dispatch knew where he was, and he most likely radioed his arrival. However, when dispatch didn't hear from him within a specified time limit, they would have initiated thier procedures for a non-responsive officer. However, by that time, the officer could have bled out..cold, alone.....
Fortunately, he was found and taken to the hospital where at least he died surrounded by friends and loved ones.
This job is simply about money....money for us, saving our client money, collecting money from def's/c/s's, etc. It's not about being "macho". No physical asset, material possession is worth the loss of a human life. So please...I implore everyone in this field and related ones....be safe but be smart...go home to your loved ones at the end of the shift.

This is very good information RWB for rookie and veteran alike. The one thing that I have learned in over thirty three of criminal justice service (LEO, PI, BEA) is that you must have to have a plan of action for every encounter, and that you must train for the encounters. That means that you must train with the tools of your trade regularly i.e. Firearms, ASP, Handcuffs, OC, etc... More importantly you must train your mindset, do you have a plan of action if a subject attacks you with a weapon other than a firearm, do you have an escape plan (its ok run away and come back with help), are you fully aware of you area of operation or the area you will be working in. How well do you know the people that you are working with and they cowboys that can get you killed. My FTO was and old time Cop's Cop, he always told be remember two things "Lets walk out as we walked in, We'll lock up the winner and take the loser to the hospital"

We lost 2 Phoenix PD officers this Fall. One was due to a sporting event, the officers vs. firemen boxing matches to raise money for local charity. The young officer was survived by his wife and young daughter.
The second officer died last month while enroute to a 911 assualt call, when he was T-boned by a DUI illegal alien. The driver had been deported 3 times over the last decade, only to return. This was not his first DUI, and had 2 active warrants on him at the time of the murder. The officer left behind his wife and daughter, and had been on the force 3 years. Last year, Phoenix lost 2 officers to criminal actions of illegal aliens.

In Philadelphia, Pa. we have lost 7 officers since May 2006 and 4 of them were this year, the latest being Sgt. Timothy Simpson, November 17, 2008.
The last 3 were within a 72 day time period.
I think it is the largest LODD list for a police department in a while, excluding NY on 9/11

I have brother-in-law with Phila PD. In fact, we lived in Phila (Fishtown) many many moons ago, before moving to AZ. Thank God.
