I recently was asked why I obtained annual out of state certifications from nieghboring states that also clearly have residential requirements.
The answer lies in minimizing my personal liability as well as the liability of my clients.
My home state has no mandatory licensing, training, or certification requirements. So any time I pursue a subject I am open to all kinds of lawsuits and criminal charges. It's just the nature of the beast here.
1 of the very first thing a prosecutor or civil attorney will attempt to do is to discredit me by portraying me as being untrained, unskilled, uneducated, unlicensed, uncertified, etc etc...knowing that the general public at large is ignorant of the fact that we have no mandated training requirements here.
So in anticipation of this probability, and for the inherent education of the updated training every year, I do acquire certifications from nieghboring states, as well as take online courses that have continuing education credits.
This keeps me informed of changing laws, provides me with professional credentials, and offers excellent networking opportunities from the people I meet.
So while it is true that a resident from Alabama, who attends a State of Georgia, Tennessee, etc. certified course still has to hire an in-state agent for recoveries, the training in itself is invaluable to me for defense purposes in legal matters. This advice was recommended to me by a criminal def. attorney who stated if Alabama doesn't offer it, then get it from the closest sources. So that's what I do.
Remember what this whole industry is truly about: Mitigating liability..not only our client's...but ours as well.

Thanks for the explaination. I now see the thought behind your actions, although I never questioned them (I just figured, it was your "thing"). This type of thinking makes this industry as a whole, look much more professional. Again, thank you for the explaination.

I am a certified instuctor in my state, and as long as a person qualifies, I will certify them. I may not like the laws, but I follow them.

LOL, it shows that we can joke around with each other, but also that we can work together for a common cause. I would love to be licensed or certified in other states, just to be better trained and able to provide the certs in court if necessary. Any training, certs, licensing, or other state specific requirements are always beneficial to any of us. Anyone that is able and willing to exchange certs works with me.
