Cell phone numbers going public tomorrow

REMINDER....all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies tomorrow and you will start to receive sale calls.

....YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone:

888-382-1222.

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time

It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS.

It take about 20 seconds. You must call from the number you want put on the DO NOT CALL LIST.

You can also add your home phone number.

I got an e-mail, once, that said this sort of thing. I am only asking a question here, but is this correct? When I called the number in the e-mail I STARTED GETTING CALLS. I had never gotten them before. I just don't want to have to go through the same junk again. So, if anyone has information that this truely is a number that does what it claims, please let us know.

Snow, ... The voicemail also directs you to this site "on-line" , if you'd like to do it there.

This is mostly urban legend stuff. Cell phone numbers are already available to most telemarketing firms. In fact, most use computer generated call list that just dial numbers in sequential order.

Check out www.snopes.com for the skinny on this legend.

It is illegal to computer dial a cell number. The only time a telemarketer is allowed to call one is if you have given it as your contact number on an application or drawing. Then unless you tell them not to call it, they can call as well as share it with all of their affiliates who will also call. It's never-ending!

Yea but,

I've still gotten a few from them on my cell. And I sure as heck did not give them my number!

My problem is that when I am out of the office, I forward my landline to my cell, and if I forget, it is set up to automatically forward after x number of rings, so I never really know what number they dialed unless I ask. I pretty much demand that all solicitors remove my number from their list, but we all know how worthless that is for the most part. IF I get a real person, I explain that no matter what number they dialed, I want my listing removed, and any future calls will be reported to my state AG. Sometimes this works, but there are a few who continue to call, even at illegal hours. I make sure they understand that their calls are documented and reported. Their response is to claim a bad connection so not understanding that I am telling them not to call, or that I am reporting them. Whatever, I keep records, and do report them.

Many are only recordings, so I simply hang up. These also have to provide a number or means of removing your number from their database, but most calls are from blocked numbers and responding only gets you more calls. I usually hang up as soon as the recording starts.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife started to receive hang-up calls every few minutes -- they lasted for a couple of hours then quit. This went on for a week. I tracked the number down to a telemarketing company, but even though they had a web page to enter one's number to add to a do not call list, the calls kept coming. We finally filed a complaint with the FCC, and they finally stopped.

The problem is that if you have ever given your cell number out on a credit app or for any form of drawing or any type of contact, you are pretty much giving them and any other company they deal with or sell you info to permission to call the number. At least that is the excuse they use, and so far it seems to be legal. Because of my biz, I have my office line forward to my cell after x number of rings, in case I forget to direct forward it. Recordings I just hang up on, but if I get a live person, I quickly tell them that they have reached my cell phone, which is an illegal call, so they will be reported to my attorney general's office as being in violation of computer dialed solicitations. I seldom get return calls from that company. My home line is on the do not call list, so if I don't recognize the number or it is blocked, I just don't answer it.

My response to the calls on my biz line that I do answer...
Many are from internet directory listings either under my current business listing or a previous one. I request that they delete my listing, because I am tired of the spam calls that I get from them. If they argue (and they always do) I politely ask if they understand English. When they respond that they do (again, they always do) I nicely ask then why they do not understand my request to delete my listing. This pretty much ends in them disconnecting the call.

I also get a lot of calls wanting to verify the model number on my printer. The fastest way to get off that bogus list is to ask where they are calling from. This scam has been going around for years! As soon as I ask what company they are with, I get hung up on, and they don't call back.

The one company that ignores all solicitation laws is out of AZ, and sells promotional crap to advertise your biz. They are the ones that start their call with, "we are the people with the bad jokes" etc... The last call I got from them, after several times telling them multiple times not to call me again, where the guy pretended not to understand me, was at 7:15am, which is illegal here and in most states. I told him not to call me that early, and haven't gotten another call. I can only hope???
