Laser sights and Vests

My question is about Bullet Proof and/ or Tactical Vests. I am sure this is another case of "It depends on what YOU prefer." However, I am wondering "What do you prefer?" I will say that I have been told that in this line of work, Tactical Vest may not be the best idea. That is just another chance to be charged for Impersonating. Then there are thousands of different kinds and styles of "Bullet Proof" vests, so making a choice gets complicated. I have heard that the style the Chapman's use (I appolagize for mentioning thier names but that is how I was shown this style of vest) is one of the best. It is very light, resistant to tears, and easy to work in. Then I have been told to avoid the flat Blue L.E. style that is used in this area due to it being heavy, hard to move around in, and its interior will turn to dust sooner than others. Also, the Impersonation subject came up again.

Then I want to ask about Laser Sights. L.E. friends have said that a fugitive, seeing the red dot chasing them, is more likely to drop and give up. Many have said, that is what happens when they pull thier Taser. Then they also say that if you have the Laser on and a flashlight in the other hand, then it confuses people into thinking there are more folks looking for them than there really are, causing surrender. On the other hand I see the red dot being another way for a fugitive to determine the Carriers location. Heaven forbid, they have a gun... now they have a target, even in complete dark. So, what do you guys think?

Re: Impersonating. If you have done a "LEO" check in, then you remove any chance/reason for this happening.

Re: Vests: How much is your life worth ? How badly do you wish to return to your loved ones every night/day ?

No one can answer your questions, because these are personal choices. Size, protection level, weight, tactical vs undercover etc...all have good points n bad.

I am just looking for what others use and/or feel. I see good and bad points with what I am coming up with, on my own. Just looking for other points of view.

I know of a Recovery team in Alabama that all got picked up on Impersonating charges. They only work the area that they were in, so they have been "checked in" for a while. Of coarse, they were wearing full Tactical Gear, in black (head to toe), carring badges, eveything. All four were picked up and charged but, as I understand it, the charges were dropped when thier creditials were checked. I would like to avoid this. Being picked up and charged is more trouble than I would like to deal with, exspecially with me just getting started. That is why I worry.

Just had a thought...kind of a, after the fact, thought. Is the above senerio, just part of the job? Is this a case of, if you do this for a living you will, most likely, have to deal with charges and jail time? Is it just a fact of being in this field that people will accuse you of...stuff? In re-reading this paragraph, my questions sound like I am trying to be smart. Please believe, I am not. I can only ask the way it comes to me. I just want to know what to expect and what the majority feel, believe, and do. Thanks for your understanding.

While I cannot speak for other's, I myself have been liability free for the past 7 years.

My formula for this ? Simple. Avoid the "cop uniforms", do a LEO check in, have all of your credentials and paperwork in order, and lastly, always make sure your skip is in NCIC if going out of your "Backyard".

I have not heard of the incident you described. I would appreciate more details so I may look into it.

I can pretty much guarantee this: Had those individuals done an in-person check in at the local PD/SO that incident would have been avoided.

I have no details. I will see if I can get more. I was told about it from someone that has worked with them, in the past. The reason I was told was to make the point of not going in looking like S.W.A.T. As long as I keep getting great advice like this, I will have no worries. Thanks Mindtracker.
