I have read many of the articles online, some where witnesses accuse Kelly Campbell of smoking ICE with them and teaching someone how to shoplift. Amazing who comes out of the woodwork in a high-profile case. I am in no way suggesting guilt or innocence because that is up to the jury.

Too bad, though that these defendants don't have an international TV show and a major network backing them. Then they would have a whole nation fighting for their innocence .

Court Adjourns Early in Lonoke County Trial

cabot - Court has adjourned for the weekend in Cabot, where former Lonoke police chief Jay Campbell, his wife Kelly Campbell, and bail bondsman Bobby Cox are on trial for their alleged involvement in a criminal enterprise.

Court recessed at about 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Most of this week's testimony has been about the former police chief wife's alleged inappropriate relationships with inmates, but Friday there was more testimony about the chief himself.

The state called one witness--former police dispatcher Lisa Marty. She testified about bookkeeping within the police department.

Logs were introduced as evidence showing that the chief borrowed money on more than one occasion for personal purposes--including taking his daughter to the hospital.

One log sheet had white-out on several lines.

The attorneys discussed other evidence that has yet to be published it court, after the jury was dismissed. Jay Campbell's attorney Partick Benca asked the judge to prevent the state from admitting a meth-straw that the state's lab results show has traces of both Campbell's DNA.

The judge decided not to rule until Monday whether the drug paraphernalia could be used as evidence.

Trial begins
Accounts of missing drugs heard as tension mounts By Ed Galucki
Staff Writer

Trial proceedings against former Lonoke Police Chief Jay Campbell, his wife Kelly Harrison Campbell, and bail bondsman Bobby Cox of Little Rock began Friday with the three defendants answering to a list of more than 70 charges. The trial could last six to eight weeks with possibly more than 200 witnesses subpoenaed to testify.

Some heated disagreements between prosecuting attorney Lona McCastlain and defense attorneys Patrick Benca, representing Jay Campbell, and Mark Hampton, representing Kelly Campbell, delayed the trial on two occasions.

Cox is represented by attorney John Wesley Hall. Though during the first days there has been little related to Cox. That will change soon, McCastlain said. Charges against Cox are related to drug arrests by Campbell and the Lonoke Police Department, a matter yet to be brought before the court.

“I’ve only just begun,” McCastlain remarked Monday. Through Monday, many witnesses had spoken of instances concerning the disappearance of medications and valuables in conjunction with visits by Jay and Kelly Campbell.

In her opening remarks, McCastlain outlined seven points she said were the core of the charges against the Campbells and Cox.

Thefts from the police department, improper arrests, exploitation of state prisoners, residential burglaries, conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, burglary of neighbors, and possession of drug paraphernalia, would be shown, McCastlain said.

Benca called on the jury to not listen solely to what McCastlain said, but to “the whole story.” Only then would the jury be able to see the charges against Jay Campbell are groundless, he said.

“Judge the credibility of the state’s witnesses,” Benca said. Many are “convicted felons” who would enjoy bringing any manner of revenge upon a law enforcement officer, he said.

It was an investigation by officials from the state Department of Corrections into the Act 309 program at Lonoke that opened the way to the larger state police investigation. Under Arkansas Act 309 of 1983, state prisoners are housed at city and county jails and made available for certain work details.

Campbell and former mayor Thomas Privett face charges of theft of services for work allegedly performed by prisoners. Both have said they had, indeed, used prisoners on their private property for work they later learned was not allowed under the 309 program.

Charges against Kelly Campbell include providing contraband items to prisoners, including the Act 309 prisoners. Though no charges for sexual contact with prisoners are lodged against her, a charge of escape is related to alleged liaisons at a local hotel, ballpark and other locations outside the jail.

In his opening remarks Thursday, Hampton apparently alluded to the incidents. Kelly Campbell had done something she was a “ashamed” and “embarrassed” about, but what those acts were should not be held against her in considering the charge, he said. Besides, he added, Jay Campbell had forgiven her.

However, the remaining charges are “outlandish” and “absurd,” Hampton said.

Among the first witnesses was Jimmy Wallace, pastor of Lonoke Baptist Church. Wallace said his connection to the police department was as the department’s chaplain. In that capacity he was at the department an average of twice a day, he said.

Wallace said he had seen Kelly Campbell at the department only infrequently, though he did describe seeing her in the exercise area one time. Under questioning he said she was in a area that was not open to the general public.

Other witnesses include Norman “Woody” Evans, Jackie Moore, Donna Moore, Lori Bevill, Jerry Dozier, Allison White, Monique Mosby, Rick Pennington, Ray Lackie, Cheryl Anderson, Mike Brown, and others.

Those who say they had medications disappear, said the disappearances were preceded by visits by the Campbells. Typically, witnesses recalled Kelly Campbell using a reason to enter a house or go to another room, often to change her infant child’s diapers. Then they would be out of sight for a time in the vicinity of where pills were kept.

In other instances, witnesses told of Jay or Kelly Campbell asking for prescription painkillers, usually Darvocet or Hydrocodone, under a number of guises. Others told of unexpectedly finding Kelly Campbell in their homes.

Anderson, wife of Dr. Les Anderson, said a number of prescription medicines had disappeared from her home. She said Jay Campbell had had the codes for the house security system, and knew where a key to the house was kept.

However, after the disappearance of the medications, all the locks were changed and codes reset, she said.

Jackie and Donna Moore said they had had a very close friendship with the Campbells - close enough to share a vacation at Gulf Shores, they said.

That friendship cooled after discovering medications were missing following visits by Kelly Campbell, Jackie Moore said.

Donna Moore told of the disappearance of jewelry from her home. She said was later able to identify several pieces, including her class ring bearing her initials, from items seized at the Campbell’s home.

Plans are to begin bringing out evidence collected at the Campbell’s home after their arrests in February 2006, she said.

Also, evidence concerning the conduct of the Act 309 prisoner program at Lonoke is likely to brought out, McCastlain said.

Standing in separate trials set for later dates are former mayor Thomas Privett, bail bondsman Larry Norwood, and Amy Staley, a former Lonoke police department jailer. Privett faces a single misdemeanor charge of theft of services. All the others face both misdemeanor and felony charges ranging from burglary to sexual assault to conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. All except Privett are also charged with operating a continuing criminal enterprise.

Mistrial declared in corruption case against Ark. bondsman

CABOT, Ark. (AP) - A judge declared a mistrial Monday in a case against a bail bondsman after the defense said Prosecutor Lona McCastlain planned to file an additional charge that the bondsman asked someone to kill her.

Special Circuit Judge John Cole granted the mistrial after a lawyer for bondsman Bobby Junior Cox argued that McCastlain had a conflict of interest in the case.

The judge said the trial would proceed against former Lonoke Police Chief Jay Campbell and Campbell's wife, Kelly.

Defense attorney John Wesley Hall said the prosecutor told him over the weekend that she planned to charge Cox with solicitation to commit capital murder.

Friday, Ron Tyler, a convicted felon, testified outside the jury's presence that Cox had asked him to kill McCastlain and a prosecution witness.

McCastlain was in court Monday afternoon and not available for comment, her office said.

The jury has heard 17 days of testimony in the case since the trial began in February.

Cox and the Campbells were accused of conspiring as part of a criminal organization to obtain drugs, money and jewelry illegally, and to obtain construction labor and sex from state prisoners. They were among six people charged in the case.

Former Lonoke Mayor Thomas Privett was charged with misdemeanor theft; former Lonoke Police Department dispatcher Amy Staley faced counts of engaging in a continuing criminal organization and third-degree sexual assault, and bail bondsman Larry Norwood was charged with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. Their trials are pending.
