CITY OF MILWAUKEE POLICE DEPARTMENT

Two Milwaukee Police Officers were shot Tuesday, November 6, 2007 when they tried to apprehend two armed males suspected in an earlier shooting.

The officers, a 31-year-old male with 13 years of service and a 26-year-old male with eight years of service were taken to a local hospital where the 31-year-old officer was treated for a gunshot wound and was released. The 26-year-old officer was admitted. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Preliminary information indicates that officers from the Milwaukee Police Vice Control Division were in the area of S. 14th St. and W. Greenfield Ave. conducting a drug investigation when they heard the sound of nearby gunshots at 7:44 p.m. Two males, ages 15 and 16, were found shot in the area of S. 12th and W. Madison Streets. They were in critical but stable condition late Tuesday. Milwaukee Police are investigating whether that shooting was gang related.

Officers responding to the shooting broadcast a description of the two shooting suspects. Three officers assigned to the Milwaukee Police Intelligence Division saw the suspects matching the description near S. 14th & W. Greenfield Streets. As the officers pulled their squad car up to the suspects, at least one of the suspects, a 15-year-old male, fired upon the officers, shooting two of them. The third officer in the vehicle was not injured.

The 26-year-old officer was able to return fire, striking the 15-year-old suspect. The 15-year-old is in police custody after being treated for his injuries. The investigation continues into whether the other suspect, a 24-year-old male, fired his weapon.

Two semi-automatic handguns were recovered from the suspects, along with a substantial amount of drugs. The 24-year-old suspect has a criminal history including drug and weapons offenses.

The incident is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office. As is standard operating procedure, the 26-year-old officer – the only one to discharge his weapon - was placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.

We ask the public to please join us in praying for the safe recovery of these two officers.
