Actor Sam Worthington, best known for his leading role in the 2009 blockbuster “Avatar,” was arrested Sunday after getting into an altercation with a photographer, New York City police said.
Police report states that actor Sam Worthington has been arrested in New York City he was accused of punching photographer Sheng Li in the face after Li allegedly attacked Worthington’s 26-year-old female companion.
The 37-year-old actor was arrested on an assault charge following the incident at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in Greenwich Village.
Sam Worthington and his girlfriend Lara Bingle, who sparked marriage rumors last week, were leaving a Greenwich Village bar on Sunday when Li allegedly attacked Bingle and kicked her in the shin.
According to a criminal complaint, Bingle told police that Li had been following her on a public street for “four hours” and “kept getting in her way as she was walking down the street and was trying to trip her.”
The Australian actor was released on a desk appearance ticket and is due back in court on Feb. 26.
The photographer, 37-year-old Sheng Li, was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment, assault and harassment. He’s being held pending arraignment. He does not have press credentials.
Worthington was born in England but moved to Australia, where he was raised and began his acting career.
In addition to Avatar, Worthington has also acted in “Terminator Salvation” (2009), “Clash of the Titans” (2010) and “Man on a Ledge” (2012). He was named “GQ Man of the Year” in Australia in 2009.
In 2012: Disorderly conduct charges against Worthington dismissed.
The photographer’s attorney, Ronald Kuby, stated that his client was the one who was attacked by Bingle and that he did not retaliate.
“Ms. Bingle was the one that attacked him,” Kuby said at Li’s arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court. “She claims that Mr. Li was following her for four hours and then runs up and kicks her in the shins. In what world does that make any sense?”
He added that Li “was on the job taking pictures and Ms. Bingle got upset and ran halfway up the block and attacked him. Her large famous boyfriend ran up and punched him four times in the face and Worthington doesn’t even get charged.”
Kuby also asserted that Worthington “absolutely got unique treatment.”
