Very well written article, most people have very little understanding of what bail enforcement agents can and can’t do. Virginia is one of the most regulated states in the nation when it comes to this industry.

The Virginia code and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice policy requires that the agent be licensed, be trained in bail and recovery laws and firearms, most of the agents I know are also trained and licensed as private investigators also. The agents are also required to receive annual in- service training.

For a law enforcement officer (Sheriff) to question the legality of state laws as to what bail agents do should be a cause for concern as to leadership of a law enforcement agency in any community.

Matt: That was a great story , I await the follow up article... :)

Sweet . . . You guys are so much more eloquent than I could ever be.
However, you and I know . . . no matter what . . . some folks just do not listen. We do not have that problem over here . . . you on Bail and you mess up . . .you going to Jail and the family knows it. I am curious tho . . . can the people not be charged with aiding and abetting, hindering apprehension, obstruction of government ops ? They can be charged as such here . . . should we know for fact that someone is in the residence we can call LE and they can be charged. I have never had a third party say no to a search . . . yet. There is always a yet

btw . . . nice post :) you and I were posting (here) at the same time and I missed yours here til I came back to post on something else.

I have found that in Virginia it all depends on what county you are in, as if law enforcement will pursue that charge if they assisted you. Other than that bail agent would need to make application to the Commonwealth Attorney who may not address the matter...
