Hung up on CCW

I'm going to try my best not to gloat here, but bear with me...

I do not carry, nor do I have a permit to carry. Not to say that I do not beleive in the 2nd amendment, or that I have something aganst guns. I own a pistol and a shotgun.

But I normally go out for my recoveries with nothing but a few neccecary items, Taser, Cuffs, Pepper Spray, and search gloves. During the short time that I have been doing this, I got a contract for a guy who was FTA for a firearms violation, and had done a few years for a drive by shooting in 2006. I managed to capture him, I won't go into details on the capture because it was "messy". But it got me thinking, is a lethal sidearm really necessary for this profession?

I'm just curios as to what your thoughts are on this.


On a side note, I should really think about investing in a concealable vest.

A legally carried side arm and vest are important if you intend to stay on this earth and in this profession. Some states require a CCW for a Taser while some cities outlaw Tasers completely. Know the laws where you intend to operate.

I agree with Scott, and carry on every case. Maybe not necessarily on every location, a place of business during broad daylight business hours for example, but it is always nearby and usually on my person. I am not sure where you operate, but I wouldn't dream of doing this without.

Far be it from me to tell you what you should do concerning this, but I'll give you my opinion. When carrying a pistol, make sure it isn't taken and used to kill you. If a person is going to carry a pistol make damn sure you know how to use it as well as learn ways to keep the pistol in a position so the chances are less likely that it will be taken during a scuffle. A lot of people get killed by the gun they were carrying, While a vest can save your life, a cop was killed here a couple months ago while wearing one. There is absolutely no way that we can guarantee that a peron won't get hurt in this business, no matter what they choose to carry. I've found if you do your job correctly and know everything you can know about the skip and his surroundings and you know when you're going to make the apprehension based on a pattern of the skips movements, you should do what's most comfortable for you. Now, that's my opinion, I sometimes carry depending on the situatin and sometimes don't. I do what I feel comfortable in doing and instincts are pretty good to have in this business

Less than lethal weapons such as taser or pepper spray are your health insurance. Your firearm is your life insurance. As with any insurance it's best if you never have to use it but you never want to be in a situation where you need it and don't have it.

My personal opinion on carrying a firearm for fugitive recovery is that it should be concealed very well. It's hard for someone to take something from you during a scuffle if they don't know you have it.

You just got a lot of very good advice from some of the best I know...

IMHO... do whatever you feel comfortable with... keep this in mind... if you are armed with a firearm... you have already introduced the highest level a confrontation can go to.... if you pull it, use it.... shoot for center mass... shoot to kill... once removed from the holster... you better be prepared and the consequences will probably not go in your favor... even if you are the "last man standing"...

FYI... I carry most of the time... but no one will ever see it unless I feel my life is absolutely threatened and that is a decision we each must make at that time...

In my civilian life... I have never pointed my firearm at anyone... but I am prepared to do so if I feel the need... and you can rest assured... you won't see it on YouTube...

Nobody will see a concealed weapon? I see people carrying so called comcealed quite a lot. In a rsteraunt just a few days ago. So called concealed weapons aren't always comcealed from a person who is very observant. But hen again I guess it's where it's concealed.

My comments and opinions were based on the length of time you'eve been in this business, I still say do what makes you comfortable. A less than lethal Taser has benn blamed on the death of many. There is case law on this one. To be legal with a taser be sure to follow all the laws in your state. There is much more to using a Taser than strapping one to your leg or wherever. Like Bill, I've never drawn a gun on a man while in this business and hope I never have to but a taser is not a non lethal instrument. Hit somebody with heart troubles etc...In my opinion many folks think, hell, I'll just tase the guy, he'll be ok. Tasers, in my opinion are sometimes used recklessly because of the mindset, that tasing someone is no big deal, tase him remove the prongs and away you go....Absolutely not true. I have read of several people's death being alledgedly caused by being tased.

Whatever you decide be informed and be careful
And remember, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to be in this business, if that were so, I'd been gone long ago. Common sense and good instincts will take you far.

Almost forgot, I did pull my weapon on one.

All good advice, thank you guys.

After this I think I'll just bite the bullet (so to speak) and get my CCW permit.

The one thing thats really held me back on this is my large frame 9mm. Kind of a pain in the ass to try to CC, maybe I'll trade her in for a compact .40sw like a glock 23
