Interesting indeed a good percentage of the recovery work my agency does involves immigration bonds. Yes deportation is up, but you folks who work these types of recoveries know it takes years to have someone deported via an immigration judge. Unless the person is a hardened criminal, and then deportation becomes immediate for the safety of the community.
However with that said a fair percentage of the deported get back into to the country and go back to their old ways. We had occasion to pick up this guy from Nigeria early one morning last spring that was set for immediate deportation. On the way to the ICE field in Baltimore he offered us money to release him, when we refused his offer he boasted that it was okay he will find away to get back into the country insofar as he has done so several times before.
Later on while speaking with ICE case agent it was found that his wife and two of his grown children were pending deportation also, that his two younger children fourteen and sixteen were okay because they were born here. Now the rub on this story is that I had occasion to see him last month at the MVA trying to secure an identification card. When he saw me he smiled and said I told you I would be back. All I could do was shake my head.

In CA it hasn't been that difficult to deport people, no matter what the charges are, at least up until now.
I know of illegals stopped for traffic violation charges that were dropped and they were turned over to ICE. 3 days later they are gone.
Now there have been many protests against that but so far the deportations are humming along. ICE even has agents that start their days at our local county jail. There is a van or bus parked there for their use.
So they come to work, pick up those that are being deported and take them to San Franisco where they are loaded with others and driven south or the airport.
It works in keeping our local jail empty of illegals.

While I generally decline to do immigration bond recoveries, I did one a few months ago with the able assistance of Lion. We picked the individual up at 6 AM in Richmond, CA and transported him to the ICE office in San Francisco (which, unfortunately, due to morning rush hour taffic, took more than an hour and a half! Normally a 15 to 20 minute drive). Because the skip had an attorney, they released him before we had finished the paperwork turning him in.
The positive side to that was the ICE agents had been looking for this individual for more than 4 months and were unable to locate him. They told us how impressed they were with our ability to find him in 2 days and actually requested that we leave some of our business cards with them!

That was outstanding work Mr. Crew, yet there are some folks who say that what we do is a thing of the past and has no place in contemporary society...

Godd work for the both of you! Gene as you know, in the Washington DC area, you have 2 options, Fairfax, VA or Baltimore, MD to drop of an ICE detainee with a removal order. The most recent ones that I have dropped off were released on recognizance with an appearance date. Some even had to buy tickets to their own country with their own money and bring the ticket to the ICE office to prove that they purchased it. This gives them a 6 - 8 month grace window for voluntary deportation. I believe the rub is that if they cooperate, there will be no hindirance for them to properly apply for a visa from their own country.

We call it "self deportation" out here, officially it is voluntary removal.
A problem for bail agents if someone is out on a state bond and voluntarily leave the country, the courts are treating this as a skip. So we would have to pay off the bond.
