Here are my top ten ways to be a successful BFA. The order is flexible but the list is solid. Not that this is the end all but it sure works for us.

10. Always pay your agents or subcontractors well
9. Always pay your agents or subcontractors before you pay yourself
8. Always pay your agents or subcontractors even if your client hasn’t paid you
7. Always communicate with your client, tell them what is happening with the case daily
6. Always remember your defendant is your client’s customer
5. Never try to shortcut the system; you will go to jail
4. Stay up to speed with all state laws and regulations. If you aren’t sure, hire someone in that jurisdiction who is.
3. Never go alone
2. Keep your day job
1. Treat the work like you don’t need the money and treat the money like you dont have the work

Excellent post Charlie

We have the same philosophy, just worded differently. I treat every case, whether it is a $500.00 skip or a $500,000.00 skip the same way, never being too intimidated or cavalier.

Ah Charlie, wish I could have hooked up with you about 5 years ago... one of only a couple of forfeitures I have paid was in the Houston area... and I had a very good location on him and his family but just too far to go and no connects in state... he is still there I am pretty sure... one of his relatives owned a small restaurant in south Houston... but alas... the collect date is past and it wouldn't do me any good to get him.. the bond was only $1500... but I have you in my ............"Rolodex... "

That was excellent advice. I would only add one more rule... if you walk in your house after a successful hunt... and you have a few bucks in your pocket... and your wife (or significant other)... puts out their hand............. "You better put something green in it... and I ain't talkin' bout lettuce"... cause she can shut you down quicker than the clerks office... 8)

Little something extra.... I am from Houston... lived on Brenard or Bernard? St.... I think it was 1318??? they tore down my grandmothers house and built a little college on that block, my grandfather... A.A. Marx was a deputy sheriff way back in the day... I have his little badge and a little .38 S&W pocket pistol (including the box and a few rounds) that he kept as a "hide away"... of course Houston was a very different town back then. I fear you have your hands full now days. Take care, be safe.

If I can find the badge, I will post a picture of it and his pistol... let me look around....

Great post Charlie.

I also would like to add, that do not ever think your TOO GOOD to ask
for help. The ability to network with others only extends your reach
and ability to finish the job.

p.s. - yes, I saw Charlie's banner, and have
been wanting to put one up since Rick "STEEL" Zambujo was making
them for everyone, and finally figured out how to do it.

Two more tips (coming from a bail bondsman)

Don't go to a bondsman's office to ask about getting work while your all dressed up like a marine core sniper or swat team member. I have had numerous guys come into my office to give me a business card wearing camo or other Rambo gear. There card goes right into the trash bin.

Also make sure you are properly licensed in the state where you are. Not to long ago I got a guy asking me about getting some work and when I asked him if he was a licensed bondsman (in Florida you need to be, bounty hunters are illegal here) he replied he didnt need a license, because his authority came from Taylor vs tainter and federal statutes trumped state law. ...... So I gave him my card, he's going to need it
