This is a good time to refresh this thread. I've had a few run ins with "agents or invetisgators" lately that don't pass the smell test.

One guy had a phone number from a state that doesn't allow surety bail. He also consistantly miss spell words in his emails, ads and website. That got me to check him out.

Finally found a recent arrest for shop lifting office supplies from a Walmart.

In the state of Mississippi you dont need any licenses at all to be a bail agent. If you want to write bonds you need to put up a $5000 bong with the insurance commision George Dale.

Maybe that is the problem with this industry today......to many people are depending on expensive bong hits to get through the day  . OK. I am sorry folks. After reading this, early in the morning, I could not resist  . My true answer is "Trial and Error. The same goes for who I work for. Some of the biggest companies are the most cut throat, underhanded, unprofessionals.....It takes wqord of mouth and trial and error.

I know a guy in Ft. Lauderdale that has a $200 bong... but I can't imagine a $5k bong... wonder if he is... as 'Joe' says... "for real?" As for checking out these guys on the net... I think after a few years in this business the 'spidy senses' get real proficient in uncovering the wanna's... just a few general questions can reveal oh so much and if you get a chance to actually see one in action... that certainly is a clue.

Even qualified and verified BEA people often times don't measure up to our particular standards... I think all of us have our preferences as to who we want to deal with and just having the qualifications does not in itself give us enough reason to jump in and do business.

Having been in this business for several years, I am extremely particular who I deal with and although I am contacted often by qualified BEA's... it takes a lot of info and time to decide to do business with an agent.

I also might say that there is a lot of "drama" associated with this business... Type A personalities often get into 'P--ing contests' with each other over trivial things... and I have found, not surprisingly, that some of the major players in this industry, put a black flag on another member who turns out to be quite proficient and successful in the business so having said that... a person in this business should make his/her own assessment of an individual and not necessarily take the recommendation of another, regardless of either reputation.

I have several personal situations directly related to this action... I hired and worked with an agent that was basically 'black balled' by a very prominent member from the west coast... turned out that the true problem after much fact finding... was the other guy... and the agent I hired did such a professional job that I was extremely impressed and will not hesitate to call him if needed, anytime.

I am of the opinion that if I see/hear someone (in any business, not just this one) put someone down or talk negatively about someone to any great degree... my antennae go up, cause that may only mean that they had a problem that may have actually just been a personal conflict and have nothing to do with their professional ability.

I think the bottom line on this thread is to simply look closely at all available info, from work history, to overall reputation as seen by others in the business and try and give a blanket evaluation... I try to give anyone the benefit of the doubt until something surfaces that can be substantiated with fact and the term "spider sense" is very applicable.

LOL . . .

This is a thread from the year 2002 I am doing some cleaning and thought that it is as relevant today as is was then.

You can see that the ability to edit posts was not available then or I am sure that word would have been changed.

Bill, You are correct, sometimes it is simply a "personal" conflict with a party. It does not necessarily make them a bad choice to work with. It does raise the antennae ;-)

Sno, I do not know if that is the case in Mississippi today.

I'm a bondsman and from time to time need help from out of state recovery agents. A quick and easy way of pulling the roots out of the ground on a wannabee is questioning; "Who have you done work for within the past 60 days?" Once they give you the name of the bondsman...Call them.
