I don't think we were charged for any updates either. Maybe it was part of the purcahse price??

Over the last six month I have been using the navigation software available through my cell phone. It's been great, very accurate, interfaces with the Bluetooth system in the car, and only adds a couple of extra dollars a month to my phone bill. On the down side one has to be in coverage for it to work.

Another reason I don't have it on my phone..too many dead spots...my Garmin has never let me down...

Stay away from the 2000 model...I didn't know it at the time I bought it, but Garmin, as of this time, does not have any updating programs available for it via thier website.
I only paid $75 for mine, brand new in the box, with all accessories, but I didn't check out that option before purchasing.
1 other thing I do now is that I run addresse's maps 3 different ways now: Google Earth, Mapquest, and Garmin. I do this before leaving my office. sometimes when I get in the field I do run into dead spots.

I have a small Garmin.... it is a portable, I use it in the car, the boat, the bike and walking... I installed the terrain, the lakes and the roads... each on a different CD... it is great... small screen but in color and programmable through your laptop. In fact, I used it on a 2 month cross country trip I took last year in my camper and all I did was add the states whenever needed... it was great and got me through a bunch of back roads without a problem... especially in the northwest... and on the one time I called Garmin... I actually got a person and they helped me without a hitch...
Model Legend CX- I put a 256mg microSD card in it and this provides plenty of room for all the maps that are installable. I like that feature cause you can hook it to your laptop thru USB and add or delete areas as needed... very versital and you can use it plugged in or mobil as in the woods... it will close down to about 35 ft. which is great when in the woods and you have the terrain CD entered. Also, you can overlap different CD's and have the roads/terrain and lakes all together. Very versitale little unit. I think it was around $300.

I have saved sooo much money on gas since I started using my GPS. best thing since sliced bread!!!

I finally got a Garmin through costco.com. Went with the bluetooth option and have it linked with my cell phone. Works great as a hands free device and I can turn it up to hear over road noise.
I've also discovered that my speedometer is within 1mph to what the satellites say I'm driving. (Always at the posted limits, of course...mostly)
It got me back to civilization from back country roads in the dark. I'm a believer.

I actualy have a Garmin streetpilot2610---yeah I know it's a couple of years old and I don't use it. I have the Streets & Maps 2007 on my laptop as well as the others I work with. We like that set up better than the garmin GPS. The screen is bigger becasue you are using either a 15 or 17 inc laptop and you have your lap top to use to search for data on the net if you need to.
