Ex-bounty hunter accused of impersonation

A former bounty hunter still on probation for shooting and killing an unarmed man in the North Side is accused of pretending to be a police officer or U.S. Marshal.
Mark Anthony Smith, 40, of the Perry South section of the North Side, is free on bond to await a hearing Thursday on charges of impersonating a public servant, carrying a firearm without a license and related crimes.

Pittsburgh police say the incident occurred Sunday when Smith tried to help a friend involved in a domestic dispute in Sheraden.

Smith was sentenced to two years on house arrest and three years' probation for the December 2004 shotgun slaying of Michael Robinson, 38, of Zelienople, in a vacant house in the North Side. Smith and a fellow fugitive recovery agent were searching for Robinson, who skipped bond on a case in Butler County.
Police were called at 12:29 a.m. Sunday to a home on Citadel Street, where a female friend of Smith's and her live-in boyfriend were involved in a domestic dispute.
The woman called Smith, who police said was wearing body armor when he arrived at the house with a loaded handgun in his waistband and ankle shackles.

Smith is accused of wearing a Fugitive Recovery Agent badge, a black shirt with "Police" inscribed on it and a ball cap emblazoned with the words "U.S. Marshals."

Yay, more bad publicity because of someone who was a BEA and convicted of a feloneous crime 3+ years ago. At least that seems to be a secondary part of the story at this point, but even the reference once again shows us in a bad light.

Now, had it been a friend without a record, or a TV personality, he would have been touted as a hero. Amazing how seemingly simple news stories tend to scew public opinion no matter what the facts.

See, now that is a good reason for each and every one of us to get a TV show.... "We can get away with anything, then". Otherwise, we have to live right, keep our word, and mind the law.

... that we could all do that... we would be out of business... my mortician friend told me yesterday... "there are actually 3 things people will do... die, pay taxes and break the law..."

and Scott, related to the media and personal opinions...

I have always believed... people make most of life's decisions and form their personal opinions on "EMOTIONS" rather than "FACTS"... I always enjoyed watching the old "Dragnet" Tv series when Sgt. Friday would always say... "just the facts, mam..."
