Bail bondsman shooting sends man to jail
By Stacy Temple

A bullet grazed a local bail bondsman this morning after he reportedly took a client to a West Monroe home to get his personal belongings.
West Monroe police arrested the man accused of pulling the trigger, Shermell Shundell Johnson, 29, of 4315 Pippin St., Monroe, a short time later.

Johnson has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal possession of a stolen firearm.

Police said the incident began around 9:41 p.m. Saturday night.

Christopher Buckley, 24, 805 S. 15th St. Monroe, went to 711 S. Second St, in West Monroe to get some of his belongings after breaking up with his girlfriend.

Buckley forced his way into the house and got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend, reports stated.

Officers responded and found marijuana in his pocket and arrested Buckley on charges of possession of marijuana and unauthorized entry.

Buckley was taken to Ouachita Correctional Center for booking.

On Sunday morning, Buckley contacted a local bail bondsman to post the $10,750 so he could be released from jail.

The bondsman, who hasn't been named by police, took Buckley back to his ex-girlfriend's house to get his belongings, not knowing that Buckley and the residents had gotten into an argument the night before.

At 7:17 a.m. Sunday police responded to the house a second time, this time in reference to a shooting.

Police said Johnson armed himself with a 9-millimeter semiautomatic pistol and shot twice at the bondsman and Buckley. Officers said one of the bullets struck the bondsman's vehicle and grazed his back.

Johnson was taken to West Monroe Correctional Center. Police said he gave a taped confession.

Police then determined the handgun used in the shooting was stolen through the National Crime Information Center.

Johnson was then transferred to Ouachita Correctional Center and booked on felony charges.

No bond has been set.

OH MAN! Well for once the system worked . . . instead of the bondsman being the 'bad' guy . . . I think that it is awesome that a stolen weapon was recovered in the incident.
