Fayetteville bail bondsman accused of using inmate to drum up business from inside jail

[The Fayetteville Observer, N.C.] By Nancy McCleary, The Fayetteville Observer, N.C.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

June 28--A bail bondsman is accused of collaborating with an inmate in the Cumberland County Detention Center to drum up business in violation of state regulations, the Department of Insurance said Wednesday.

Brunhilde B. Ross, 53, a surety bail bondsman who lives on the 100 block of North Reilly Road, is charged with two counts of aiding and abetting an unlicensed bail bondsman and one count of aiding and abetting the solicitation of bail bonds, a news release said.

She is accused of collaborating with inmate Rainey Hope Crosby, 36, of the 500 block of South Eastern Boulevard, said Kerry Hall, a Department of Insurance spokeswoman.

Crosby was incarcerated at the county jail between April 4 and May 2, Hall said. While there, Crosby gathered names, criminal charges and bail amounts of the other inmates and passed the information to Ross, authorities say. Jailers tipped off Department of Insurance investigators.

Crosby is charged with acting as a bail bondsman without a license and solicitation of bail bonds, Hall said.

Crosby and Ross were arrested Monday, and bail for each was set at $2,000, Hall said.

It was during that investigation that insurance authorities learned that Harold Orlando Hill, 41, of the 5700 block of Meharry Drive, acted as a bondsman April 16 when he helped Ross try to apprehend a defendant on a bond forfeiture, Hall said.

Hill is charged with acting as a bail bondsman without a license, Hall said. He was arrested Monday and bail was set at $1,000.

Another bad story, but what they didn't report is that I was in the very same city this month standing behind a house that my fugitive lived in. They didn't report, that the area I was in was drug and gang infested nor did they report that I had to fight the brother of my skip, along with his buddy and both were high as hell. I'm sure I wasn't the only Bail Agent working the Ft Bragg area that night and I'm sure my skip was not the only one that was put back in jail by bail agents that night.

Not trying to brag about the apprehension, most here could have done the same and probably better. It's a shame we aren't getting the other side out there. The shame is on me, you guys knew nothing about it til now. Looking forward to the day we slam the press with the good things we do.

Not long ago, ken Banks and myself were looking for a bail absonder and an absconder from probation/parole. After some work and talking to people that knew our guy, we found that he lived about 45 minutes from Asheville. So, off we go, only to find that this guy lived in an area that a damn pack mule could hardly get to. This guy stayed high on meth and has a violent past. We tried to set up on his trailer but there was nowhere to do that without being seen. I would go to his trailer at 2 and 3 in the morning trying to find him home. He knew we were looking for him so he didn't go home. Finally, after several days I got a call from an informant that I had spoken with. He told me that my guy was at his wives ex husbands place while the ex husband was being treated in a local hospital for some mental issues. I called Ken and we left immediately. Apprehended the skip and transported him to jail without incident. The cops knew where he was but wouldn't go to the house because of the terrain. His probation/parole officer wouldn't go for the same reasons. When we placed him in the Buncombe county jail additional charges were filed on him He is now in the North Carolinas Department of Corrections.

Again, no braging here, any of you could have done the same. Again I have enough stories to drown out the bad ones. I went to the jail bleeding once and they asked if the defendant had any injuries. He didn't but not because I didn't want to injure the bastard. I wasn't offered a damn band-aid. Go figure.

Boy, Bill do I remember that road! No going in there very far without 4 wheel drive or dragging out the bottom of the car. NO police officer would dare take a cruiser in there :D This road had wash- outs 6-8 inches deep in places. Bill just kept going back, there is no quit in this man. Never have a problem going with him, because it's going to be done legal and by the book even if it means waiting hours for him to see the person. Bill is like a bloodhound, when he get on your trail he doesn't stop until he gets you.
If anyone new on here ever needs a recover agent, give Bill a call and he will get the job done. I was busy and had a skip, so I called Bill and ask him if he could check around and see if he could find out anything on a guy who was living in Black Mtn. About 2 hours later Bill called back and said the guy is now in Buncombe County Jail. That's fast, quality work.
Knowing Bill he will say it was good info. from me or Indem. but, in 2 hours he had this person in jail. Period!!!!!
Keep up the good work

Man I love to hear the positive storues of lawful apprehensions absent the drama. While I understand that the media needs to hear the number of times this is accomplished with no drama, that very fact keeps them from publishing such information as it just doesn't sell newspapers. Lastly, the true professionals, the ones that make the largest volume of fugitive apprehensions, shun media attention as they know it would make their job harder. Unfortunately, those that insist on posting every capture on the internet makes one wonder why they have a need to do so. The people with the largest volume let their work product advertise for them and frankly, due to the work volume, have no time for internet grand standing. Here is to the silent soldiers with no aggressive names or self bestowed ranks or titles!

Just got home. Have been working on apprehending a guy for over a week. He is now in Jail. No injuries and believe it or not no hard feelings. I always tell em it isn't personal, just doing my job and that seems to put them at ease. By the way, I truly mean that, 99 percent of the time. The other 1 percent, I get my paperwork signed and leave. Anyways, while waiting on this guy to screw up I had a chance to think about other things. I hear people talking about the lack of work in recoveries. I'm thinking there are always skips running from bondsman and frankly my work load has not slowed down as I know some here are also very busy. My advice to anybody that finds the work isn't there, is to back off re-group and see if maybe you are not getting the job done in a timely manner, or you're coming off to your client as some tough guy (I have never seen a client that will hire a wannabe tough guy) do you present yourself in a professional manner, how do you dress etc etc. The work for the most part is out there and your job is to build a reputation of getting the job done without incident,in a timely, professional manner. if you'll do this you'll find you won't have to look for work, it will come to you. So be sure and build a reputation you can be proud of and you will no longer have to beat on doors asking for work.

I'm still a little jacked up and thought I'd throw this out there. By the way, there are people on this forum that I won't name, that have more work than they sometimes want. The reason, their reputation.

By the way, Remember, Ken is my friend. He won't tell you a lie but I'm no better than most of you. My problem is, I don't quit and that is not good for your health, but, don't know any other way. Still got that damn rapper on my mind. If this makes no sense, it's 2:50 am and my butt is draggin.

Get some rest Bill as you know fatigue can cause problems. You are a true pro and I countenance your advice.

Well, Scott, I will mention again that you are the real deal also... like the time I called you at 3pm with a skip in DC who was supposedly living in a homeless shelter... and we weren't sure which one... Scott called me at 7pm... the skip was in his car and he was driving south.... how the hell he did that I have no idea.... But Bill W. and Scott and many others on here are all in the same boat... they are the ones I call if need be....

Have a good 4th..... uh oh,..... phone just rang............. gotta go!! 8) no holidays in this business... not if your gonna make a living at it........................
