Having worked in corrections I may have different views on subjects like this. I think its disgraceful to sell "safety" or comfortable accomodations to incarcerated people. Our whole prison system is archaic and flawed. The distinction between a penitentiary and a correctional facility is often hard to see in this country, rehabilitation doesnt happen in a penitentiary type environment. I would like to see more robust assessment and classification of inmates and for those that will be returning to society we need facilities that more closely resembl. Society but with adaquete security to ensure containment. Put them in a secure correctional community with apartments, jobs etc.. let them earn a living, pay their bills, prepare their own meals and do their own laundry all while being securely separated from the public. The current approach institutionalizes offenders and makes them even more dysfunctional upon release.
