Bentonville bail bondsman find quarry in Belize

BENTONVILLE, Ark. A Bentonville bail bondsman seeking a bail jumper in a drug case traveled more than 1,400 miles to find his quarry in Belize.

Curt Clark, the owner of Action Bail Bonds, traveled to the Central American country on a tip that Dustin Eugene Chandler had fled there. Chandler, facing multiple drug felonies, fled the country and didn't appear for his March 20th jury trial. Action Bail Bonds holds 30-thousand dollars in bonds for the man.

Clark, acting on a tip, says he followed Chandler's trail to Belize. Clark found him there Sunday in the island city of San Pedro, off of Belize's Caribbean coast. U-S Marshals arrested Chandler Tuesday morning and revoked his passport.

Chandler is being held in a Houston jail, awaiting extradition back to Benton County. He could face additional felony charges for failing to appear at his trial.

Note "who" made the arrest. There are ways to do things right.

$1.5 Million Bond After Capture
BENTONVILLE -- A judge slammed a $1.5 million bond down Thursday on a Bentonville man accused of fleeing to Belize to avoid trial for operating a methamphetamine lab.

Dustin Chandler, 33, hung his head low as Benton County Circuit Judge David Clinger questioned whether Chandler's previous bond of $30,000 had been set high enough.

Chandler's bail bondsman, Curt Clark of Action Bail Bonds, tracked down the fugitive in San Pedro, Belize, and arranged capture by U.S. Marshals on April 10. Chandler was returned to Arkansas on Tuesday.

Mother Pleads Not Guilty to Helping Hide Son

By Robin Mero
THE MORNING NEWS
BENTONVILLE -- A former records clerk with the Bentonville Police Department pleaded not guilty Monday to helping her son elude police when he faced drug charges.

Marie Chandler, 61, appeared before Benton County Senior Circuit Judge Tom Keith on one charge of felony hindering apprehension or prosecution. She is represented by Fayetteville attorney Wendy Hoverton.

A pretrial hearing is planned Aug. 6, and a jury trial Oct. 9.

Chandler was arrested May 18, less than two weeks after her son Dustin was sentenced to prison for 24 years on drug charges.

Her son was to face trial in March but fled to Belize, where he was tracked down by his bail bondsman and captured.

He left a note for his mother, apologizing and saying he "had no choice" but to flee, his attorneys said.

Bank records showed her son used her debit card to rent a vehicle in Tulsa, Okla., to drive to Texas -- and several times in Belize. She may have known about the transactions but did not cancel the card, court records state.

Police also have a recording from a telephone conversation between Chandler and the bail bondsman in which she said her son was somewhere that he couldn't be extradited.

Marie Chandler was a records clerk at the Bentonville Police Department when her son was first arrested in October 2003 for operating a methamphetamine lab in her home. He was arrested again in July 2004 after a traffic stop that again led police to search the home.

Chandler resigned after the arrests. She is free from jail on a felony citation. The charge she faces is punishable by up to six years in prison.
