Hey guys. I'm a private investigator in toronto ontario, canada. I find this site pretty good ive been checking through the forums. I just have a question if anybody knows. Is there any fugitive recovery agents working in toronto or even in ontario? Ive looked through some of the laws and it says example private investigators in ontario can legally carry a gun if they have their canadian firearms permit. Ive checked the internet and the phonebook and i havent seen any bailbonds places around here. would anyone happen to know if there are any? Ive been looking into it and I want to get into fugitive recovery. thanks

I doubt if a socialist country like Canada has commercial bail. I would imagine it has defendants post small cash bonds, but I dont know. You should easily be able to inquire locally and find out. It wouldnt take much investigation.

I didn't bother to click on the sites, but my understanding is that bail enforcement by a US citizen is illegal in Canada. Maybe a Canadian citizen could somehow get the person across the border, but without seeing some legal authority, I probably wouldn't accept custody.

I have always been taught and told, through all of my courses, that bounty hunting in Canada is illegal. Canada does not recognize our right to re-apprehend bail jumpers.

Andy, Taken from the same website you cited...I believe that this is "to the court" bonds as it is illegal to do so for money!
The surety must have sufficient funds or personal assets in Ontario (i.e., the province where the accused stands charged) to cover the recognizance, that is, the amount of the bail. He or she should attend court with proof of his or her ability to do so (e.g., bankbooks, proof of property ownership), and photo ID, such as driver's licence or passport. If bringing a bankbook, make sure it's updated. It is a criminal offence to accept payment to act as a surety. Offering such payment is also an offence.

Hell Scott, thats the way it is here in alot of counties. We have our assets pledged. We have to send in new appraisals every year. We have to send in a list of outstanding bonds each month to every county we write in. Some counties let you write dollar for dollar with your assets, some as high as 10-1. Some dont care as long as you dont have outstanding judgements. Either that or you have to work for an insurance company.
