Anybody from Ohio...

Im just getting some information on BEA, so anyone that can answer these questions for me, or point me to where I can find it, I'd be eternally grateful.


1. Ive heard that you have to have a PI license in Ohio, or is it just
that no bondsman will give you a job wihout being a PI?

2. How would I go about getting a PI license and do I have to carry
insurance, and if so... whats the average cost?

3. Do Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and West Virginia require some
license?

4. Ive contacted a BEA about an hour or so from where I live. (live in a
small town) asking to ride along to start learning. Which he was kind
enough to agree. (Thank you) He also mentioned going to a BEA
school... are there any in, or close to Ohio that are reputable?

5. Could someone actually explain the difference between a secured bail
bondsman, or licensed bondsman... and what exactly does a licensed
bondsman get licensed to do?

In regard to your question about Ohio, I was trained in Ohio and Ohio does require a PI license to do fugitive recovery/bail recovery. I have the name of my trainer (located in Columbus) and can give that to you if you wish, just email me at bruce.patterson@insightbb.com

Not true, Im also trained in ohio, And as long as you have a surety bail agent license, You can arrest.

Here is what I have from a Pre -license course.

Ohio Revised code section 2927.27.

A. No person other than law enforcement officer, shall apprehend, detain, or arrest a principal on bond, whereever issued, unless that person meets
the following criteria:

1. The person is any of the following:

a. Qualified, licensed, and appointed as a surety bail bond agent

b. Licensed as a surety bail bond agent by the state where the bond
was written.

c. Licensed as a private investigator

d. Licensed as a private investigator by the state where the bond
was written.

e. An off-duty peace officer

2. The person, prior to apprehending, detaining, or arresting the
principal, has entered into a written contract with the surety or with a licensed surety bail bond agent appointed by the surety, which contract sets forth the name of the principal who is to be apprehended detained or arrested.

3. The person , prior to apprehending, detaining or arresting the principal, has notified the local law enforcement agency having jurisdiction over the area in which such activities will be performed and has provided any form of identification or other information requested by the law enforcement agency.


B. No person shall represent the person's self to be a bail enforcement agent or bounty hunter, or claim any similar title, in this state.

C. Whoever violates this section is guilty of illegal bail bond practices
A violation of division A of this section is a misdemeanor of the first degree, or if pleaded guilty to 2 or more violations a felony of the third degree..

But i dont think you can make an arrest in ohio without calling the authorities.

Did you read Ohio Revised code section 2927.27. ?

It states you can arrest if you meet the following critieria.

So as long as I'm working for a surety in this state (indiana) and am a licensed PI in my state I can pursue the fellow into Ohio and make the arrest. Of course I will have to notify local LE and give them whatever info they need as well as have the contract from the surety I am contracting with which states the name and info of the fugitive.

This is actually a statute which has elements which should be adopted by all the states.
