I was watching the tv show "Special Ops" the other day, when I heard this concept:
"Ability, Opportunity, Jeopardy". I thought, "wow, that's right on the money". So I don't know who the original owner of that concept is, just know I am not claiming credit for it.
Here is how I break these terms down related to our industry:
Ability = Training, Physical fitness, Skills, Intelligence, Experience, Common Sense.
Opportunity = Recognizing the timing of your operation, Location, environment, safety issues, legal issues, etc.
Jeopardy = Personnel safety: yours and your team's, safety of the community, safety of the mission, and mitigating your client's liability. Like Scott M. says "What starts out bad, only gets worse".
If the opportunity isn't right, or you don't have the ability to perform your mission safely, then back off and await a better opportunity that wont jeopardize the mission.
I think these are practical principles that should be incorporated into our field.
