Indiana 50/50 Company Split

Here is an email that was sent out on a Yahoo PI Group:
" I am needing to get 4000hrs to get licensed on my own in the state of Indiana. So what i am looking for is a licensed PI that would like to open an agency here in Indiana and i would work under their license and be A PARTNER with them and would run the agency here and split the income 50/50 and we would sign a partnership agreement stating as such. Feel free to ask questions, also i am getting my Bail Agents License (which i am contracted to someone to write only) so i can bounty hunt for anyone and also looking into notary and collections licensing".

To new people coming into to the business or interested don't let a message like this stop you dead in your tracks. No one is going to give you 50% of their company and Income.

On the surface, they don't sound like some one I would want to hire.

We get allot of requests from people wanting us to license them under our license. most are new people that read the state requirements for a PI license and think some Agency is going to license them under their license and that will let them work for them self. It doesn't work that way.
The Agency that licensed you is responsible for everything you do if you make a mistake on a case, or you shoot someone, hurt someone or just make a bad decision the agency could be hit with lawsuits that could ruin them even with insurance. People just don't understand what all is involved in licensing someone under ones license. This is not to say that the person who requests this would not make a good employee with time and training. I personally have helped several people break into this business in Indiana, some have burned me, some tried to burn me, some have been excellent employees and some have gone on the open their own business and have been successful and some have not , i also have a few people license under my license who are out of state that have earned my respect over the years and i feel they have the knowledge, background and professionalism to conduct an investigation in the State of Indiana

Good advice David.

I only have two people under my license.

One is someone I have known for a long time and have worked with prior and the other I have under a pretty decent liability contract and promissary note (though he is moving out of state and will no longer be under my license - good fellow, works in land aquisitions and what not, wanted me to work with him but I don't think that's my cup of tea).

My hesitation in using someone like this, is he or she is trying to jump into 4 distinct fields of work. It takes years of training, trial and error and experience to get good at any one of these areas.

I'm a notary and WAS a process server, besides being a bail agent. I didn't get good at any of them over night. I also helped people with locating debtors, so I was some what involved and still am with collections.

If you're very good at any one of these areas, you usually wont have time for any other side jobs, unless you're in an area where the pace of business is slower.

I gave up process serving and only do notaries in our office when I'm there because our bail business keeps me more than enough busy.
