I have read through a good share of the state laws and poured over many of the posts on this forum and have been unable to really get a feel for where the best place to be a BEA/FRA is. So, forgive me for my ignorance, but what is the best place to do this type of work? I know this is going to be all personal preference and opinion but I am really curious to hear what everybody thinks, all things considered (Training requirements, licensing, least restrictive laws, etc.) Thanks in advance and I look forward to reading your replies.

I didn't understand all of the cloak n dagger stuff myself either, but that's the way he wants it, so I will respect his privacy.
However, the overview is this: He is leaving the military soon, is open to relocating anywhere, wants to do this job as a career, and so was conducting valid research on where he could most effectively, legally, and profitably engage in the BEA field.
I advised him of the following:
1) Alabama is probably the least restrictive in terms of licensing, training, legislation, etc. ; But it is also the least profitable.
2) Next I advised that major Southern cities could be profitable and have minimal requirements save Florida.
3) Following that, I further stated that Los Angeles by far has the highest fee schedule, but also is one of the toughest regarding licensing, training, and working.
4) Then I informed him that major northern cities like Philly, Pittsburgh, Newark, Camden, etc could be profitable.
5) Of course I also STRONGLY recommended legitimate formal training in this field. I suggested he could take online courses until he ets's from the service, then attend 1 of the recognized BEA schools.
That's the advice I gave him. As always, these comments are just my own opinion.

Sorry, no cloak & dagger intended. Just wanted to directly address the person asking the questions. I was going to come back and post, I just hadn't got to it yet.
Anyway, Mindtracker pretty much said it all. I am leaving the military and looking at BE/FR as a career. I am from Florida, but it seems very, very restrictive there, and I currently live in Virginia but don't care for it to much. Neither place is really where I want to be.
Any information from anybody would be more than welcome, especially general information about the job. I was looking towards the West, possibly Nevada but I really haven't made a solid decision yet. I have about 18 months left so plenty of time to decide. You guys do a great job with information here and I hope to someday be verified so I can get on the Agent Forum. Thanks again and I hope to keep learning.

Well,
To take it a different direction. Recovery work may be very lucrative in the LA area. However, will you like to live with all the traffic, 100's of agencies that some will be friendly or unfriendly to recovery agents? How about the large number of illegals you will be working on?
I like Nevada. I would not work as a bail agent there. Too many transients, too much open space, too low bail schedules. The average bond is around $3 - $5k.
So, in my opinion, the best place to work is the place you are familiar with, have contacts and know the local laws.

LOL@Max.. Shame on you Max. NC is a fairly large state, there is room for both of you......Just like Alabama, there is no way I can cover the entire state. Some parts I don't want to.
Anyway, this guy has 18 mos to decide, so no worries for now. He can do online courses, learn Spanish, and stay in shape physically to prepare for this career change. Who knows what our industry will be like in 18 mos ?
