App 3 yrs ago a Chattanooga, Tn. rookie BEA was MURDERED in Jackson county, Al.
The gist of the story is this: Fugitive Atchley (sp?) was tracked and located to a mobile home near Scottsboro, Al. he had jumped bond on a Chattanooga, Tn. bondsman. The BEA was a rookie. He had only been doing this for app. 6 mos. According to various sources the rookie BEA kicked the door in of the trailer. He began searching the trailer and found the fugitive hiding in the bathroom. words were exchanged, and then shots fired.....
Agent down !..Agent down !
The fugitive shot and killed the agent at point blank range. He and his girl friend then exited the trailer where 2 other rookies were just standing in the driveway, unarmed, no vests, and no communications. The fugitive kept them covered with his weapon while he fired up his Harley and then both he and the girl friend fled and stayed on the run for a little over a year. They were eventually captured in Mo. and extradited back to Jackson County, Al. where he is presently incarcerated.
Now to the point: His defense attorney is asking any and all BEA's in 3 different states to come and testify as to what all BEA's can or cannot do; tactics and procedures, etc. in an attempt to illustrate that the BEA somehow broke the law, acted unprofessionally, or otherwise mishandled the situation...i.e. that the reason the BEA is dead is due to his own alleged negligence or illegal activity !
To this point, as far as I know, not a single BEA or bondsman has agreed to help the defense out. That's like asking a cop to testify on behalf of a cop-killer. It just isn't going to happen.
Yes, I am one of the so called "BEA experts" that the defense team contacted to come and testify as an expert witness on this field of employment.
Anyone care to guess what my answer was ?

Lets all go testify about what a no good piece of Crap the defendant is for killing the BEA, if any BEA testifies for the defense he should be tarred and feathered, I'll even spring for the Tar.

I'll get the feathers .
Send the jerk a copy of T vs T. I'd like to see him out there knocking doors and facing bullets instead of hiding behind a desk trying any tactic to get a killer back on the streets.

Let's see...
No vest or radios
Kicking in the door
Arguing with the fugitive
Assistants not on the "ready"
This is definitely a menu for disaster. The BEA may have been ill equipped, however, to testify on the side of the defendant... NOT!

Steve,
No, as far as I know the fugitive was not affiliated with any gangs. However, this incident did make the media at the time it happened, so it is possible you read about it.
