Army says 12 dead, 31 injured at Fort Hood
One suspect killed, two others in custody in incident on Texas base

NBC News and msnbc.com
updated 2 minutes ago

At least one U.S. soldier opened fire Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas,
killing at least 11 people and wounding 31 others, military officials
said.

One gunman was shot to death, and two other soldiers were in
custody, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the
Army’s III Corps, told reporters.

Cone gave no further details on the dead gunman. A senior Obama
administration official told NBC News analyst Roger Cressey that
one of the suspects who was in custody was an Army major.

The official said the shootings could have been a criminal matter
rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no
intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood.

Military and local hospital official officials said the victims were a
mixture of men and women, military and civilian. At least one of
those killed was a civilian police officer, Cone said. At least four
local SWAT officers were among those wounded, NBC affiliate KCEN-
TV of Waco reported.

Fort Hood, one of the largest military complexes in the world, was
on lockdown, as were schools in the area. Dozens of agents of the
FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
responded to the post, federal officials said.

Speaking in Washington, President Barack Obama called the shootings a “horrific incident.”

“It’s difficult enough when we lose these great Americans in battles
overseas,” Obama said at the Interior Department. “It’s horrifying
that they should come under fire at an Army base on American
soil.”

Shootings at two sites
Emergency Services officials at Fort Hood said the incident began
about 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 ET) when at least one gunman opened
fire in the Soldiers Readiness Processing Center and Howze Theater
on the west side of the base.

A spokesman for the base, Sgt. Major Jamie Posten, said the
processing center was where soldiers “cycle through as they
prepare to deploy.”

Retired Army Col. Greg Schannep, an aide to Rep. John Carter, R-
Texas, who was on the post to attend a graduation service, told
the base newspaper, The Fort Hood Sentinel, that he heard “three
or four volleys of shots, with eight to 12 shots in each volley.”
“Initially, I thought it was a training exercise,” he said. But then, “a
soldier came running past me and said, ‘Sir, there is someone
shooting.’

“As he ran past me, I saw blood on his back,” Schannep told the
base paper. “I don’t think he even knew he had been shot.”

Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, about 60 miles northeast of Austin.
The sprawling complex is home to at least 4,929 active-duty
officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.

A spokesman for the Army, Lt. Col. Lee M. Packnett, said he was
unaware whether security measures were put in place at other
military bases. A spokesman at Fort Lewis, Wash., said the incident
was being treated as isolated.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, said in a statement: “I am
shocked and saddened by today’s outburst of violence at Fort Hood
that has cost seven of our brave service members their lives and
has gravely injured others. My heart goes out to their loved ones.”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s campaign spokesperson said the governor
was in Denton, scheduled to attend a campaign event, when word
of the shooting occurred. There was no word on whether he had
left Denton or whether he was headed to Fort Hood.

UPDATE

(CNN) -- Eleven people plus a gunman were dead and 31 wounded after the gunman opened fire Thursday on a soldier-processing center at Fort Hood, Texas, officials said.

The gunman was a soldier, and two other soldiers have been detained as suspects, Army Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said.

The slain gunman was Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan, according to a law enforcement source. The source believes he is 39 or 40 years old.

Ten of the other dead also were soldiers, while the remaining one was a civilian police officer who was working as a contractor on the base, Cone said.

Two of the injured were in "very serious" condition, Fort Hood spokesman Christopher Hogue said

UPDATE
4:36pm: AP source:
Fort Hood shooting suspect is Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan.

FORT HOOD, TX (KLTV) - Lt. Gen Bob Cone said at a news
conference that one suspect has been killed and two others were
apprehended after a massive shooting took place at the Army's Fort
Hood base at about 1:30pm Thursday. According to U.S. military
officials, 12 have died (including one alleged gunman) and more
than 30 are injured.

He says the suspects are all U.S. soldiers. He says the primary
shooter used two handguns in the attack.

Cone added that all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier
Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or
who are returning undergo medical screening.

Lt. Col. Nathan Banks, an Army spokesman in Washington, says
there was a pair of shootings at the base. Banks says the first
shooting was at 1:30 p.m. and at a personnel and medical
processing office. He says the second incident took place at a
theater on the base.

The Web site of the base in central Texas has posted an alert that
says, "Effective immediately Fort Hood is closed." The Web site said
that units at the base have been ordered to account for all
personnel. The site says, "This is not a Drill. It is an Emergency
Situation."

Fort Hood is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

Carter Blood Care is putting the call out for O-negitive blood. They
provide blood to the hospital on the Fort Hood post in Killeen.

Donations are accepted at any Carter Blood Care Center in Tyler
located at 815 Baxter Street and are open till 8pm Thursday.
Longview location is open until 7pm

Wow. Unbelievable. I am truly stunned and appalled. This just goes to show you that no matter where you are, things can take a turn for the worse. Things like this happening always cause me to reexamine my preparedness situations.

UPDATE

Officials: Fort Hood shootings suspect alive; 12 dead

November 5, 2009 10:12 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- A solider suspected of fatally shooting 12 and wounding
31 at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday is not dead as previously
reported, Army Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said Thursday evening.

A civilian officer who was wounded in the incident shot the
suspect, who is "in custody and in stable condition," Cone told
reporters.

"Preliminary reports indicate there was a single shooter that was
shot multiple times at the scene," Cone said at a news
conference. "However, he was not killed as previously reported."

The suspect, identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, opened fire at a
military processing center at Fort Hood around 1:30 p.m., Cone said.

Three others initially taken into custody for interviews have been
released, Cone said.

Hasan, 39, is a graduate of Virginia Tech and a psychiatrist licensed
in Virginia who was practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at
Fort Hood, according to military and professional records.
Previously, he worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

A federal official said Hasan is a U.S. citizen of Jordanian descent.
Military documents show that Hasan was born in Virginia, and was
never deployed outside the United States.

Hasan was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq "and appeared to be
upset about that," Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said.

"I think that there is a lot of investigation going on now into his
background and what he was doing that was not known before,"
Hutchison said.

At least 10 of the dead were soldiers, Cone said.
