What was he armed with? A firearm, knife?

It seems like if he was wanted and had prior felonies, the police should have had some reason to charge him rather than just release him.

Is there more to this story?

At first I honestly thought this was a joke, but now I am just at a lost for words on this one. I think Marshall summed it up very well....

My second arrest in this industry was at one of the bonding companies we work for. The gentleman had lied about who he was, hence the revocation, and our contact in warrants said while out on bond (a whole 72 hours) he had gotten into it with the local SO, escaped custody, only after biting one of them, being tased, and sprayed; suffice it to say, a very, VERY, dangerous man. Long story short...he was dumb enough to come back to do paperwork. The deputies wanted to effect the arrest and make entry. Not ONE of them had any sort of long weapon, all pistols and a few with tasers.

Is an AR a good weapon in a close quarters environment? Depends on the situation. This one? No. Tactically speaking that round will over-penetrate and probably wax whomever is unlucky enough to be behind the PIQ/threat. Second, that close quarters the weapon, even if a short barreled M-4 was utilized is still big. A man crazy enough as this guy (the straight jacket fellow) could potentially take control of it, and if it was slung, you are attached to that weapon and heaven forbid something happen.

Is an AR useful in this profession? Yes, it like other weapons can have a purpose. I know there are a lot of agents and bondsmen out there who cringe as I say this but hear me out. We've had fugitives out on small bonds (traffic) draw down on us just as quick as the heavy hitters. Some of them are packing, some are not, but most to all have had weapons charges. Do we take the chance? Absolutely not. Now, saying that, anything we use we MUST be accountable for. I must be able to justify having an AR in case it is used. Sometimes they are that bad, and sometimes local LE won't come out to help bondsmen or agents, thus having such tools is a blessing.

The point is this: common sense, in a tactical environment what would work, in a civil court what can we justify. Personally a hard take down for this guy makes sense. But if he is that dangerous and it's that close I'd want both hands free to secure his arms, hands - anything he can use to grab for his weapon or harm me - and restrain him. Ultimately, cornering him and closing the distance was what saved the day during the first arrest. Now, saying all this, it is easy for one to sit here after the fact, and Scott was right - the most important AAR or critique is your own with your crew after the arrest. But, in the end, was the fugitive apprehended, and did everyone - including the defendant - come home or leave unharmed?

Well...for the defendant, if he did do some "x" and swallow Rat Poison he is a moron and would like to submit his name to the Darwin Awards.

Sounds like a real CF.... I too thought it was a joke at first... I would have just had my 3 Navy Seal friends waiting for him in my office while I sat at my desk with a glass of ice tea... if I have the slightest question about the outcome of a probable bad situation... I call in the professionals and let them take care of business.... I like to watch exciting stuff like this... I am no longer a participant... I used to be a real bad arze... but now I am just an egg mcmuffin. 8) and everyone will reach that plateau eventually...
............. some, sooner than others................. (I can, however, still shoot pretty good... )

What is important here is that we learn the correct lessons and don't drive someone underground without learning the right way to do things, hence why I asked for his self critique. With his own observations, we could more clearly dissect the situation and determine what he feels went wrong. We might learn that he has no issues with what others may deem an issue(s) and have a problem with LE releasing him. I find it troubling on multiple levels, to include the story changing as the level of questions (all unanswered) increased in directness and frequency.

For the betterment of our industry, we need to be able to teach and counsel without belittling someone, allowing them to remain receptive to direction and instruction. That said, there are always individuals that can't be coached, taught or led, and they need to be discouraged before another industry killing issue raises it's ugly head.

My, MUCH more experienced, colleagues are being too kind and over-explanatory. This post is nuts. Somebody strip these clowns of whatever is authorizing them to do recovery in there state before someone gets, unecessarily, hurt or killed.

after speaking with you this AM my Lil Brother . . . I have re-read this thread and I am still @ a loss for words (imajine that  )
This is like taking a machete into a close quarters situation . . .YA JUST DON'T DO IT!
an AR 15 is an assault rifle . . . there is no necessary reason that I can find to bring one into a confined area . . . and one sure as hell does not beat the subject in the head! . .. Unless of course you are wanting to be a "Case" in a Courtroom with the "Reasonable Man" sitting in the box
All of my Brothers have pretty much told ya how it is i. . . in a NICE way . . .
It started going bad when the bondsman wrote the bond . .. "for the money" . . .

Well I know he was crazy, so no chances were going to be taken. A AR is a awesome weapon, if you are firing it or if you just need to knock them out. We knew what the local police had been up against with this guy before, they wound up having to shoot him. If he would have managed to get out the emergency exit, I was going to pop him in the knee (right where he had been hit before)

Wow, WTF……….. I just read your story and find it hard to fathom. I just wonder why you have not been arrested for aggravated assault yet. With that said I will not attempt to second guess your actions I would only hope that you learned a lesson from this event.

Secondly I know that your state does not regulate bail enforcement, however you may want to invest in some type of legitimate training i.e. advance firearms, criminal law, and civil rights law. Not only for your protection but for the protection of others that may have the occasion to come into contact with you.
