This is sort of related........ sort of........ just another gun tale............. sort of..........

Many years ago... my uncle, who lived in Texas, called me and ask me about some advise concerning some collectors weapons he had and what he planned to do with them. Now I have always been into guns to one degree or another but most all I have are just regular stuff... no real rare pieces or not real valuable... they are all very good quality weapons but nothing over the top, so to speak. You gun people know what I am saying... Remington, Ruger, Browning, Marlin, Winchester, S@W, Colt.... stuff like that.... good stuff but not real collectibles...

Just wanted to set the stage for my little tale. 8)

So my uncle (the crazy one) calls me and tells me that he wants me to transport his firearms from his home in Texas to my home in Virginia and "Sit" on them while he is out of town for a couple of months if not years... now, I had no idea at the time what he had but here is a very partial list.... British Bren LMG Mark 1(M): Mk 1 Barrel; Belgian 9mm Vigneron SMG Gun; MP 40 German WWII SMG w/Carry Case; 3 or 4 German Lugers; a Swedish MG I think was a Valmet; several Russian MG's of various models... at least 6 .45's all 1911's of various manufacturers (did you know Singer Sewing Machine company made 19ll's?); and several P-38's... these were all fully working weapons... can you believe this..... he was gonna give them to me and the chances are he would not be back to get them............

I reluctantly turned him down..........

I checked with several gun dealers and inquired as to the shipping costs, also local LE for the laws of transporting collector items.... I also very seriously considered driving to Texas and picking them up.... I chickened out.... at the time, had I been stopped and the weapons had been found in my car, I would have had a very hard time explaining the deal and in fact would have lost the guns and very likely my freedom... I did not go and he gave them to another family member in Texas.

He did however mail me... through a gun dealer in VA... the Swedish Valmet and a very nice 1911 Colt, the Valmet I found out was not full auto, so was legal for me to own... I have kicked myself many times since then... but, who knows where that would have gone..... I also was not real sure where my uncle... God bless him... got these guns and who would know that I was picking them up... another reason... but sure wish now I had gone and taken that chance....

This is the same 'crazy' uncle (you all have one don't you?) that took me and my Dad (his brother)... 20 or so years ago... out in the Gulf of Mexico on his 45' boat where we shot several of these weapons... the one I like was the MP40MG... there were 9mm casings rolling all over the deck... can you imagine what would have happened to us all if the Coast Guard had heard us shooting automatic weapons out in the Gulf... we would all still be in jail in Texas.....

Just sort of a related tale thought you might like......... see why I am a little guns shy.... and a bit crazy... it was my uncle... it's in our blood....

Bill,

I completely understand where you are coming from. In all honesty I don't feel very apprehensive about it anymore because I carry so often, but every once in a while I do get a tad bit nervous in some situations. It does help when your wife is a LEO (Even though she's on medical leave at the moment). I follow the law and try to keep up on legislation and restrictions, but things change so frequently it is hard to keep up. I think all of you are hitting the nail right on the head with your replies so to speak. After being an innocent victim of a shooting a few years back, I vowed to never go anywhere again being unarmed. I somehow think I might have been more fortunate if I would have had a gun instead of a knife. In all reality however, it probably wouldn't have made a difference due to the altercation being a drive by and myself having no idea that I was a target.

I will say one thing, and I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I carry everywhere and I will continue to do so until I am no longer on this earth. The way I feel is, if you are carrying concealed, what no one knows will not hurt them. I was grateful when Tennessee amended the law here to allow people with CCW's to carry in an abode that serves alcohol as long as you aren't consuming i.e. restaurants. At the same time it was also amended to allow carrying in state parks, and municipal and county parks as well, if it isn't posted or in their code.

As a respectable non-felon citizen with no mental disturbances I think anyone should be allowed to carry arms for protection. But that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about those. :)

Everyone be safe, and have a wonderful night!

Scott M. I cannot imagine the restrictions you face in everyday operation. I have, on limited occasions, had to go into DC and also southern Maryland on business and I always read up on the laws so I at least am aware if something should occur.

I tracked a guy in southern Maryland with one of my sons and although the info was bogus, we did have to knock on a few doors and approach a few folks in the course of the search. I was very apprehensive during the entire operation and although we had talked with the local LE, I didn't feel a bit better after the contact and was very glad to get "out of Dodge". Your AO of bonding and FR is strenuous to say the least.

Did you get the impression that they were daring you to go ahead? The issues around here can change shift to shift.
One shift Commander will support you and the next will threaten to lock you up if you hunt "On my watch", although I
have gotten to the point that it isn't worth the fight anymore. I try to work smarter, not harder. The other issue with concealed carry is that we go throughout the entire Washington metropolitan area on 1 skip, some we are licensed to carry on and others we are not, so what are you to do? With my other duties, I am on and off secure posts and in and out of secure buildings and carrying is a no no!

Scott

I do feel for you Scott. Thats gotta suck. Ft Leonard Wood is about an hour from here. We have an office there and 6 agents in that county. Pre 9-11, it was no problem. You drove on and off post as you pleased. Ive carried out there countless times, many times with a gun on the dash of my truck or hangin in the back window. No problems. Getting a skip was almost fun. Go find an MP sitting somewhere, fire him up a little, which was easy to do most times, give him the info and turn him loose. LOL He would get some MP buddies and it was game on. They could do most anything to get the guy back and you could go with them. Talk about violating civil rights, they had no rights. LOL

I havent been on that fort since that fateful day. Now you stop at the gate and your car gets a search, and you if they want. You cant hunt. They have a law enforcement liasion, which is getting better, the power went to his head the first few years. You contact him and he will locate the guy and send the MPs to get him and they will bring him to county jail, you cant do anything. I guess thats easier on our part, but not as fun.

Unless going hunting, which is like pulling teeth, god forbid you dont call in or get on the wrong area that happens to be closed that day only, you willl go to jail, I wouldnt take a gun on that base for anything. Thats why I wont go on that base.....
