Hi, this Brad out in the Northland back from from a sabbatical. I saw a recent article about Congress trying to outlaw Spoofing phone cards/calls. Just wondering if anyone knows how this will work if it becomes law and would there be exceptions for licensed investigators, bea's, skip tracers, etc?
Thanks,

Hi Brad, my name is Camilo from Dallas, Tx. Well, as far as I am concern, effective as of 2006, President George Bush, signed a bill to the Telephone Records and Privacy Protection Act of 2006. The measure threatens up to 10 years behind bars to anyone who pretends to be someone else, or otherwise employs fraudulent tactics, to persuade phone companies to hand over what is supposed to be confidential data about customers' calling habits.

Even before Bush's move, federal law banned pretexting to obtain someone's financial records. Some states, such as California, have already outlawed telephone pretexting. But many politicians and consumer advocacy groups urged passage of a federal law to clarify that the practice is illegal.

However, in my years of bounty hunting spoofing did work for me to find my target. But, yes, you are taking a gamble.

There is a thread here somewhere.
I would look for it but that would take away from the investigative abilities of those that have queried this topic. If yall have not found it by this late evening I will do so . . .

Camilo,

I believe Brad is referring to spoofing Caller ID data.

Here are a couple articles I found on caller ID Spoofing.

http://www.bondforfeitures.com/caller_id_spoofing.htm

http://www.calleridspoofing.info/

http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h1258/show

There are a couple of threads that come up if you type in Call ID Spoofing in the search function on this site. Plus you can look at the bill online that is in open congress. The name of the bill is Truth in Caller ID Act or HR 1258. This is what I could come up with; I only had a short amount of time to spend researching this subject. Hope it helps.

Be advised that it is never smart to admit to, or brag about, illegal activity on a public domain that becomes part of internet history. I have noticed that you have done this several times on different topics and it has become a pattern of behavior. Any one of us can take this industry down by our actions, don't be that guy.
