...unless the local LEO's are working undercover; then they are not required to show a badge. It goes along with the old idea that if you ask someone if they are the police, they have to admit it. That was only on TV and in the movies! Anytime law enforcement is working undercover, whether local or federal, they are exempt.

The first time I encountered this with a fake US Marshal, he had a badge and it looked like a US Marshal badge. So the badge isn’t worth much, it’s the credentials on the other side of the badge that I would have liked to see. When I checked with local PD I thought for sure they would know, but they weren’t aware either. It seemed suspicious, but the guy was in fact a Marshal in this case. I checked at the jail the next day, and one of the defendants was turned in by the Marshals.
I maintain a decent professional relationship with local pd’s and sheriffs in my area, but still have no idea how to build or maintain anything with the marshals.
The only time a police officer must tell you he/she is a police officer, is if they arrest or detain you. Up until then, they can make up information or withhold information at their leisure.
