Handcuffed Suspect Escapes Custody, Carjacks Woman
Carjacking Victim Saved After Pulling Over On 405 Freeway
6:42 am PDT October 12, 2005
LOS ANGELES -- A search continued Wednesday for a Louisiana man who escaped while handcuffed in the custody of bail bondsmen in Van Nuys and allegedly carjacked a woman before running off.
Brian Thomas, wanted on a drug warrant from Louisiana, had been taken into custody by bail bondsmen, who were holding him in the 7300 block of Woodley Avenue when he got away from them shortly before 8 last night, according to Los Angeles police.
The man, wearing handcuffs, made his way to Sherman Way and Woodley Avenue, where he allegedly carjacked a woman and forced her to drive south on the San Diego (405) Freeway, said Sgt. Don Muniz of the LAPD's Van Nuys station.
When the woman pulled over to the side of the freeway near Burbank Boulevard, a California Highway Patrol officer approached the vehicle, and the suspect ran away, Muniz said.
A perimeter was set up around the area, but the 32-year-old man eluded capture, Muniz said.
Thomas is black, 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes, according to LAPD Officer Sandra Escalante. He was wearing a New York Yankees shirt.

Same type of thing happens to cops--here in nh a few years ago a sheriffs deputy was transporting a naked intoxicated female in the rear of the cruiser when he stopped at a local pd leaving her cuffed behind her back in the car-she got the cuffs around front and crawled into the front -than using the keys he left in the ignition of the cruiser she went on a merry ride around the area while being chased by local pd units --she finally 10-50(CRASHED THE UNIT) and was taken into custody
another case i was involved in in nyc a subject was cuffed behind his back and was put into an unmarked cruiser for transport when he scooted over to the opposite side and right thru the open door and took off running(i did that one i did not know my partner had opened the opposite door)
i could tell many more including one of a high ranking CO that put a prisoner in the rear of a ambulance and than walked to the front of the unit to speak to the very cute medic with out even closing the doors--guess what happened next by- by prisoner
so i think ca-ca happens when we let our guard down or when we get distracted---its real good to discuss this stuff because not only do we get to laugh at ourselves but we learn how easy it is to screw up

I was recently contacted by Mr Unger who says that my post is inaccurate and that we can check with Fox news. He says that the transfer agents let the guy get away, and that he then caught the suspect later. He says the transfer agents were from a Southern state.

I would be interested in knowing who the transfer company / agents
is / are.
We were doing some work for a county here in AR. and lost it to a transfer company from TN (not transcor) due to the negativity in ridding ourselves of an individual.

To clarify, he said that the agents who lost the suspect, or who let him get away after capture were the receiv ing BEA agents from down south. Not a transport company
