Can I get some advice from some of the more seasoned guys and gals on this site? It has come to my attention that one of the jails in my area is referring callers to a specific bonding company. An individual contacted me doing a bail bond a while back, and I asked where he got our number for my records. He told me that the jail gave him a specific company's number to call, but they wouldn't write the bond for him due to certain criteria. I very rarely write a bond at this facility. What should I do? It should say on the county's annual report who is writing the majority of the bonds correct? I feel this a very unfair practice that I assume happens or has happened to some of you. What approaches have you taken? Have the problems been remedied? Thanks for all your input and have a very happy new year!

This goes on and will continue to go on, regardless of what any of us do or say... it has been an ongoing problem in several jurisdictions I work but nothing that is said corrects the problem and DCJS, who is supposed to oversee these type of problems... have no teeth.
All I have ever ask for is a fair shake and a name like everyone else on the board.... there are some jails that are pretty straight but then there are some that have their favorites. It is human nature and probably is not correctable.
Now I will say this........... I have operated in my AO for a fair number of years and I do know that although I do not condone the practice... I do have friends inside and close that will recommend me just as others get referrals, so I cannot say a lot about it since I am on the receiving end in some instances... but in others I am totally blocked out. I would be happy to be in the middle of all rather than on top on some and on the bottom on some... it is a very difficult situation to contend with but as said, virtually impossible to correct.
You are dealing with human nature and friendship and that is difficult, if not impossible to change.

Bill,
I agree with you, and I worked for the sheriff's office before I started doing this, so I'm sure I get some referrals too, actually I know I do, but without asking. I guess what the most aggravating thing is that evidently the front receptionist will just say, "Hey call such and such if you need a bail bondsman." I mean, wow that is way out of line. Thanks for the input though. I know one person (my company/myself) against everyone else isn't going to help and will just create problems. I'll just suck it up and go on. I was always under the impression that these practices were "illegal". I guess it is soliciting right?

Joshua, In TN, you write at the pleasure of the Judge and if he thinks there are enough bondsman, nobody else will be allowed to write, is that not correct?
