Can't say it quite as eloquently as Tony and Kathy - but if you are in this business to get rich - forget about it - unless of course you are one that simply writes for the money.
Me, even tho I might desperately need the $$$ I will pass on a bond that I know that I am going to have to hunt . . . or worse yet. . . pay.
Learned that from Bob and my Dad.
Kathy you and I work alot a like . . . hmmmmm. . . we all have twiners and Kathy you are from my neck of the woods
By the way K ...how is the baby?

Oh,
Be careful in Louisiana. You have a lot of displaced residents. Their property was lost in Katrina along with many of their jobs. It will be hard to verify addresses and phone numbers.
Many people are going to cell phone plans that don't require a contract. They walk into a cellular provider, pay monthly fee and walk out with a phone. They can use any name or address they want. As long as the monthly prepay charges are paid on time, they have a phone. So it is getting harder to track someone through those numbers.
You will be lied to! Usually the more complicated the story, the bigger the lie.
Start out very conservative until you get a feel for how everything works. Build up your BUF account them consider taking on a little more riskier bonds.
Don't think because you may be the best BEA in the world that you will always find your skip, so you can go ahead and write every bond. Lots of bail agents thought the same and are now out of business!

Thanks a lot for all the answers so far.
What is a BUF account?
About what % of bonds that you get asked to write do you actually write?
Can someone explain more about where the money comes from? I think I remember seeing something about the agents using companies and simply writing on the companies behaf(sure it is more complicated)
Thanks again.

Lance, try researching this forum before asking your question. Alot of what you want/need to know is here...use the search function and type in some key words, then if you are still having difficulty ask us the question.

I've tried, but I don't know correct terms for things and therefore can't pinpoint the keywords need. Any ideas?

Mindtracker bumped up the thread on BUF funds to make it easier to find.

The money given to the courts. Or is there no money given on each and every bond(perhaps a singe sum kept by the courts?)
As I said, I've found it hard to find info not knowing the proper term for things.

It seems like that you need a Bail 101 course. There are a couple of books on the market, one is called Bail Bonds 101. Another is How to Run a Bail Bond Business. Check the online book sellers. Check out the PBUS website and see if Louisiana Bail Agents Association has a web site.
To answer all of your qustions will take a lot of space and time. If nothing else, go talk to a local bail agent. You should be able to find one willing to talk to you about the business.
