There is also a move towards computer surety where the insurance companies post bail directly with the courts electronically.

Well that would be the end all of the Bail Bondsman in the areas where Insurance was the Surety. However, there would still be a need for the Recovery Agent ;) cuz ya know . . . some folks just cannot wrap their damned heads around the simple fact that sometimes ya just gotta walk away from the money, or the promise of, on the table . . . Greed and stupidity will be the end brought about by fools.

It wouldn't be much different than the Posting Agent system the big bonding companies use, where the person actually "underwriting" the Bond never meets the defendant.

I'm a firm believer that certain businesses require a personal touch and this is one of them. The decision maker should interview the defendant prior to deciding whether to write the bond, I know some jails won't facilitate it but there's always the telephone.

I've had clients get upset with me when I quoted them 25% to do a recovery and I just told them I would have only charged 10% if you had done your due diligence in the beginning and had a complete, accurate and verified bond application, but since you cut corners I have to put a lot more time and effort into finding the pieces of the puzzle and putting it all together, you can save 75% or lose 100%, your choice. I preach to Recovery Agents that they shouldn't offer flat rate service, do a case review at no charge and then make an educated quote.

The more the big corporates get involved the more corners that will be cut and they will also try to cut costs and increase profits by using a Wal-Mart style strategy to lowball Recovery Agents. Capital Bonding was a good example of getting to big and too greedy, disaster followed, although I can't complain since I made a lot of money helping to clean up the mess.

Me too Chuck! There was only one run out that I worked on that had more bond boxes than that one.

Indeed Scott, we were sort of in the right place at the right time when Harco (SAI) needed recovery agents. Some here at FRN might remember Max Astor, he worked those cases in and ariund NC and made a killing as well. I think they wanted to contract with Lance as well but he was upset about getting stiffed by Capital Bonding.

For those of you that are fairly new here Scott was an instructor along side of Mel Barth at the NABEA class in Falls Church VA. They mentored many people in this industry including me, about 14 years ago when I was fairly new to the Business I was very fortunate and priviledged to learn from these guys. Mel has since passed but thankfully we still have Scott.

That was very nice of you Chuck. When Mel died, they offered to sell he the association and the class material, but I declined because I had no intention of purchasing my own intellectual property, since I wrote the class for the NABEA through probably 6 iterations.
