SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE June 20, 2011 1:32PM Just in time for Father’s Day, about 80 “deadbeat dads” were nabbed in a two-week sting operation that targeted Cook County fathers seriously delinquent on child support payments. The men owe more than $1.73 million collectively, the Cook County sheriff’s office said. And authorities are still seeking 20 others with outstanding warrants. “Operation Deadbeat Dads” started June 1, when about 45 investigators began a door-to-door sweep, tracking down parents with warrants for failure to pay child support. Among those arrested was Cleveland Keys Jr., 46, of the 1200 block of West 90th Street in Chicago. Keys owed $213,677.41, the highest amount of unpaid support, the sheriff’s office said. He owns a barber shop in Evergreen Park and was arrested June 14 after an undercover officer went in for a haircut checking to see if Keys was at the business, the sheriff’s office said. Byron Portis, 29, of the 9500 block of South Racine Avenue, owes $59,227 in child support. And when investigators came to his townhome June 5, they discovered more than $44,000 stuffed in a bag, as well as four loaded firearms, the sheriff’s office said. In addition to the dozens arrested during “Operation Deadbeat Dads,” investigators are seeking information on David Fisher, 45, of the 1700 block of West Hubbard Avenue in Chicago. Fisher owes $243,569 in back child support. Police are also seeking Armando Aguilera, 35, of the 2000 block of South Ashland Avenue in Chicago, who owes $45,305 in unpaid support, among others. Anyone with information on anyone wanted for failure to pay child support is asked to call (800) 447-4278. |
