MARLBOROUGH —

A 34-year-old Marlborough man was held without bail after his arraignment today in Marlborough District Court on charges he beat his roommate with a beer bottle during a Sept. 18 fight at their Lincoln Street apartment.

The roommate, 38-year-old Romero Mejia, died at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester this weekend from injuries that may have been related to the fight, according to court testimony.

Noe Martinez, 34, of 475 Lincoln St., was arraigned on charges of aggrevated assault and assault with a dangerous weapon. The assistant district attorney who is prosecuting the case said she expects Martinez will face additional charges pending a police investigation.

A Marlborough District Court judge scheduled a dangerous hearing for Martinez on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also requested that Martinez be retained.

According to court testimony, Marlborough police interviewed Mejia at UMass Memorial Hospital on Friday, Sept. 24, a week after the fight. At that time, Mejia said Martinez struck him with a beer bottle, according to court testimony. Martinez acknowledged striking Mejia but said he was defending himself against attacks from Mejia and Mejia’s friends, according to court testimony.

Police are investigating whether Mejia may have sustained another injury in the week after the fight occurred and when he sought treatment at UMass Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 23.

"When the politicians (and the wanna be politicians) knock on your door, ask them on where they stand on illegal immigration, and see what kind of answers you get. I tell them up front if they aren't willing to try and do something about the problem, then I won't even consider voting for them. It's time to put the squeeze on these so-called representatives of the people....."

I think that I saw that "THE" marlboro man has cancer, and has pushed and supported various lawsuits against tobacco companies for his and others' conditions. He is VERY sorry for HIS role in coercing people to smoke. I'm sorry, but unlike some, I refuse to blame anybody for my decision to do anything that I chose and choose to do. It is only the sheeple that choose to blame others, and refuse to take blame for their actions. I lay the blame on our country's sorry condition and future on them, because they are the idiots that are costing our freedoms and giving government control.

During my travels a few years ago... I had occasion to travel up 395, which is a mostly two lane road running north/south on the east side of California... up through some really beautiful country... high Sierras and desert type... anyway... I think it was somewhere around 'Lone Pine' or in that area, we stopped in a small town restaurant to have breakfast around 6am... there were 3 or 4 really big high dollar horse trailers out front in the dirt parking lot and when we walked in, there were at least a dozen young men sitting having breakfast.... they were all actors and the road crew for "Marlboro Country" TV ads (this was back in the day when they were still legal)... every one looked like a rugged cowboy type and would make any young woman start to 'lather up'........... know what I mean LuVonda and Kathy???

I read a few years later where almost all of the actors that actually smoked were dropping like flies with lung cancer.... not sure of the validity of that particular story but we did sit and talk with these guys and had a very interesting breakfast that morning. (I think their horses are still alive.......... they didn't smoke!)

Just another little story from the old man.................. related in a small way to this thread.

Kathy,
Some of the issue about smoking isn't just your decision to smoke or not smoke, it is that they put additives into the tobacco to make you addicted to it, knowing it would do so.
